Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider lost his cool on Tuesday night. In the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 46-year-old got ejected following a heated argument with the umpire over a controversial call.
The Canadian side, who are the reigning American League Champions, are having a tough start to the 2026 season. In the rematch of the 2025 World Series on Monday, the Blue Jays got crushed 14-2.
Home runs from Daulton Rushing, Freddie Freeman and former Blue Jays star Teoscar Hernandez saw the LA-based side dominate their opponents. They would rub salt on the wound by placing Miguel Rojas on the mound in the 9th inning.
The game on Tuesday saw a rematch of Game 2 and Game 6 between Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Kevin Gausman. The Dodgers once again drew first blood and took the lead in the 3rd inning through a single from Shohei Ohtani. Will Smith would drive in the 2nd run through a ground ball after beating the throw at first and denying a double play.
It was in the 5th inning when things got a bit heated. While facing Alex Freeland, Gausman used a bit of stutter step before he threw the pitch. Home plate umpire Dan Merzel would call this a balk and allow Freeland to advance to first base.
Schneider was not pleased with this and came out of his dugout to have a word with Merzel. As he argued the call, the umpire would throw him out of the game. The Blue Jays manager then lost it and tore into the official.

The American international’s face would turn red as he argued with Merzel. He received huge cheers from the fans at the Rogers Centre as he walked back after his verbal attack on the umpire.

Schneider, who is highly vocal, was ejected for the 13th time in his career. This was his 1st ejection of the 2026 season.
His fierce words, however, failed to ignite a response from the Blue Jays’ offense. They scored just 1 run in this game and suffered a 4-1 defeat. They are now 4-7 for the season and suffered a third consecutive series loss.
John Schneider defends himself over his stance following ejection from game
John Schneider was extremely displeased with the balk decision by umpire Dan Merzel and had some tough words during the game. Following the game, he defended himself over his stance.

The Toronto Blue Jays manager expressed that it was not a balk. He later added that it felt good to remove some of his frustrations.
Kev has a little ‘tap, tap.’ He was kind of the poster child for complete body stop a couple years ago. … When you look at it, Kev came set. It was a slide-step to control the running game. So definitely was not a balk. I’m not gonna move off of that. … Felt kind of nice to get a little frustration out.

Schneider’s frustrations were much more about the balk. The Blue Jays, who started the season 4-1, suffered their 6th consecutive loss on Tuesday.
Before the series against the Dodgers, they got swept in a 3-game series against the Chicago White Sox. It was the first time since 1995 that the White Sox had swept them in Chicago.
In the two games against the Dodgers, they have been outscored 18-3 while having just 11 hits. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have had 25 hits, signaling a major gap between the two reigning league champions.
If the Blue Jays lose on Wednesday, it will be the second straight series where they will be swept. At the moment, they are 4th in the American League East standings, 4.5 games behind the New York Yankees.
