The San Diego Padres ownership saga has a new chapter. On Thursday, the MLB owners unanimously approved John Seidler, brother of late Padres owner Peter Seidler as the team’s new control person.
This decision comes at a very crucial time. A month ago, Sheel Seidler, the widow of Peter Seidler had filed a lawsuit against her in-laws regarding the team ownership.
Sheel Seidler filed a lawsuit in the Travis County Probate Court in Austin, Texas against her brother-in-laws Matthew and Robert Seidler in an effort to take control of the team. In the petition, she accused Matthew and Robert Seidler for fiduciary breaches of trust, fraud, conversion and egregious acts of self-dealing.
I filed a complaint against Matthew Seidler and Robert Seidler to protect my family and to carry out Peter’s legacy. Aside from our three wonderful children, and our marriage, there was nothing Peter and I valued more than the opportunity to serve as stewards of this extraordinary franchise.
Sheel Seidler said in a statement on X
She would even accuse Robert’s wife Alecia of making “multiple racist, profane and hateful communications” at her.
Peter Seidler acquired the ownership of the Padres in 2012. Along with his uncles Peter O’Malley, and Ron Fowler, who formed the O’Malley Group, he became he owner of the team.
Following his death in November 2023, John Seidler was named as the control person of the franchise. The MLB owner have now officially unanimously approved him as the new control person of the Padres.

Will John Seidler’s appointment as Padres’ control person lead to team being sold?
The San Diego Padres’ ownership saga has caused a lot of stir on social media. With John Siedler’s appointment as the new control person of the team, a big question has popped up. Will this lead to the team being sold?

The reason this question has come up is due to the tensions in the Seidler family. The strong accusations from Sheel Seidler could lead to some major decision from the family. However, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred does not think that this would happen.
The MLB top boss on Thursday claimed that there has not been a “single word” of the ownership willing to relocate to a new area.
My understanding is the family wants to keep the team. There has not been a single word or whisper of relocation in the context of the San Diego Padres.

The ongoing ownership saga has been a tough one for the fans to watch. As the drama unfolded, the team kept on losing some of their top targets and are yet to make a big-name signing this offseason. This has led to stars like Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. being left a bit disappointed.
It now remains to be seen how this change in ownership would work out for the Padres. With just mere days remaining for the Spring Training, time is running out of their hands to land some top stars and strengthened the squad for the 2025 season.
