Kendrick Lamar was chosen to headline the Super Bowl LIX half time show considering his songs were the talk of the hour. The NFL wanted to cash in on that fame as the Grammy Award winning artist had become a global sensation. In his most important song though, there was a reference to one NBA Hall of Famer named John Stockton.

Usually, when a black rapper wants to include athletes, they usually go with people from their race. It resonates with their audience easily. But Kendrick Lamar did not just win 22 Grammy Awards off some random or crowd-pleasing references.

He meticulously weaves the lyrics so that his listeners can understand all the references. That is what caught the ears of many when the 37-year-old rapper referenced a white 62-year-old basketball player named John Stockton.

The Utah Jazz legend was made aware of the fact that the lyric ‘I’m finna pass on this body I’m John Stockton’ was part of Lamar’s biggest hit song, ‘Not like us’. He shared what transpired during Super Bowl LIX on The Ultimate Assist Podcast.

I knew of the song. I have young people in my life. My kids all know about this song, and we frankly knew it was coming. Everybody was kind of huddled around the TV to see if my name got mentioned at halftime of the Super Bowl, which it did.

The Utah Jazz legend went on to add that his wife, Nada Stockton, started receiving calls and texts after Kendrick Lamar rapped out those lyrics. To hear his name being mentioned during the half time show of Super Bowl LIX was a big deal.

John Stockton has a connection to Super Bowl LIX winners

The point guard is not the lone athlete in his family. The Hall of Famer revealed that his grandfather, John Houston Stockton, also known as Hust Stockton, was a quarterback for the Frankford Yellow Jackets. That team became the Philadelphia Eagles in 1933.

Coincidentally, the Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl LIX after demolishing Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Therefore, it was a big day for the Stockton family as not only was his name a part of the greatest spectacle in sports this season, but his grandfather’s team also won the Lombardi trophy.

John Stockton, however, has not been able to win a ring. His legacy established himself as one of the best point guards to ever play the game. His exploits alongside Karl Malone sent the Utah Jazz to the NBA Finals twice. However, they faced the indomitable Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls.

The father of six now resides in his hometown of Spokane in Washington. As a retired great, the world refers him as the standard in many statistical areas. Many have come and tried, but he remains as the NBA’s all-time leader in assists and steals.
