John Stones pushing for England call-up as reinvigorated defender keeps hitting new highs for Manchester City
The injury-ridden defender cost Manchester City quite a bit of money to prise him away from Everton. While he was signed for £50 million (£47.5 million + £2.5 million add-ons), it took a bit of time for him to live up to that money. He has had a bad run with injuries which meant that he never actually got to keep his place in the City squad and had to fight for it to get it. Now is his time as Vincent Kompany has left and Aymeric Laporte’s lack of form means he has a free run now.
Formidable partnership with Ruben Dias has seen Manchester City concede a lesser amount of goals
Ruben Dias’s signing was mocked as it seemed like Manchester City was ready to simply throw money at whatever player they wanted without even negotiating. The same was with Nathaniel Ake as both were signed for more or less £50 million. However it has been the very opposite with Ruben Dias as he has steadied Manchester City which was leaking too many goals. He has formed a formidable partnership with John Stones which has seen the blue side of Manchester concede just two goals in the 16 games they’ve played together.
In compensation of the two goals Manchester City conceded, John Stones has scored 3 goals himself and has made Pep Guardiola praise him to the moon. Truth be said Pep Guardiola didn’t give up on him and kept him around the squad despite his injuries. Now he is being repaid for all that as Manchester City has won every game that Stones started, barring the draw against Liverpool.
The young English defender is aiming to put together a good run of games and stay away from injury as he wants to be noticed by Gareth Southgate. Euro 2021 is right around the corner and the defender wants to be named in England’s squad and some will feel that he deserves a call-up. Considering the fact that the alternative is Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez being injured, John Stones more than deserves to be called-up to the squad.
