Retired and first-ever MMA referee John McCarthy has never been seen as someone to have a lot to say as a person except for commanding instructions to the fighters while refereeing them. Until a couple of years ago where he started speaking as a fan of the sport in his podcast. And just like that, McCarthy has given his assessment on a potential super-fight between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic.

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones is likely to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in his UFC heavyweight debut. However, the fight without the belt is magnificent in a way that both are the longest reigning champions of their division. In an alternative possibility, both might fight for an interim heavyweight championship. The current undisputed champion, Francis Ngannou, is in a conflict with the UFC over his deal for his future career in MMA.

In his podcast co-hosted alongside former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson titled “Weighing In”, McCarthy answered Thomson’s question on how the fight would go.

“I think Jon knows it [the title shot] is coming and he’s just starting to wet the whistle on it and get people’s attention towards it and that’s okay that’s what he’s supposed to [do]… Jon is too good for Stipe at this timeI love Stipe but Stipe’s getting older and it’s the wrestling of Stipe that usually works for him.

He’s got the ability to you know to have that and have in his back pocket where you can either use it or at least threaten it and people have to you know fight a certain way…He’s not going to be able to threaten it in any fashion with Jon, that’s going to cause a problem and Jon can do it in reverse to him and you know…” says McCarthy.

What do you make of McCarthy making a case for Jones to defeat Miocic? Are you on the same page or do you think Miocic has chances against Jones? This fight will be one for the golden pages of the history books. Do you see a finish or will the fight go to the distance?
