The drama surrounding Jon Jones and his sudden retirement is far from over, continuing to captivate MMA fans. A few months ago, the former heavyweight champion shocked everyone by unexpectedly announcing his retirement from MMA after UFC Baku. But soon, ‘Bones’ backtracked and is now preparing to return and fight at the highly anticipated White House Card in 2026.
For the unversed, Jones reversed his decision after President Donald Trump announced the White House event for celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Soon after, the former 265lbs kingpin re-entered the official UFC testing pool, preparing thoroughly to participate in the historic celebratory fight event.
And in a recent interview during the MTV Video Music Awards, Jones revealed strong motivation, promising to do everything possible to compete at the White House event.
I’m not retired, I’m actively training 5 days a week and I’m in the UFC’s drug testing pool…I’m training for the [White House] event, I’ll be ready for the event that’s my goal but ultimately it’s up to the boss.

According to Jones, competing at the White House event is an honor, serving as his tribute to America’s respected army veterans. However, his excitement was initially dampened by Dana White’s rejection, as the UFC CEO reportedly does not fully trust Jones. Following recent drama during Tom Aspinall‘s fight negotiations, White became hesitant, unwilling to risk unpredictable issues at such a historic event.

The CEO surprisingly placed greater trust in Conor McGregor, despite the Irishman not competing professionally in over four years. Irrespective of all the negativity, Jones hasn’t given up and is positive about his chances at the White House event. The consensus MMA GOAT understands White’s role as the boss, but has confirmed that the door isn’t fully closed, which is enough to motivate him.
Ariel Helwani weighs in on Jon Jones and his $30 million fight purse saga
For the entirety of his tenure before his retirement, Jones avoided fighting Tom Aspinall and was accused of ducking the then-interim 265lbs kingpin. Adding to that, Jones reportedly requested $30 million to face Aspinall in a heavyweight title unification bout, unexpectedly accepted by UFC executives.
But he ultimately decided to call it a day instead of taking the highly anticipated fight, shocking fans and leaving the heavyweight division in uncertain limbo.

Dana White reportedly felt betrayed by the pound-for-pound great, believing Jones’ abrupt decision sabotaged the promotion’s plans. Consequently, Aspinall was elevated as the undisputed champion following Jones’ departure, effectively ending months of speculation and debate over Jones’ legacy. Ariel Helwani recently talked about Jones’ latest interview on social media and shed some light on it.
Jones was on the red carpet of (VMAs) talking to his long time publicist Denise White and I don’t know maybe because he didn’t want to talk to anyone. I thought it was a little bit weird that he was just answering questions as if it was a media interview on the red carpet. Some things were addressed and the main one being that Jon isn’t retired…For me this comes out as someone who was offered a lot of money to fight Aspinall, said no and I think he’s having buyer’s remorse.

This comes across as someone having buyer's remorse.
It appears he regrets saying no to the $30 million. That's the only explanation I have for the insanity of retiring for 3 days. pic.twitter.com/1o9gqZ2c6U
Aspinall has refused Jon Jones a title shot at the White House event, dismissing America’s Independence Day celebrations altogether. The UK native is uninterested in participating and unwilling to repeat difficult negotiations with Jones after previous frustrating championship discussions. Moreover, he is now scheduled to make his first title defense at UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane next month in Abu Dhabi.
And even if the fight happens between the duo, a loss for Jones against Aspinall would reflect poorly on such a prestigious occasion. Nevertheless, the White House event’s date and venue are yet to be finalized, and excited fans eagerly anticipate the historic spectacle despite the controversy.
