Former Masters Champion Jon Rahm did not have a good time on the course on Thursday. While making his 9th start at the Masters, the 2023 winner had a frustrating day at the Augusta National Golf Club. He almost snapped his club in half while venting his frustration.

This was Rahm’s first start on the PGA Tour this year. As a member of LIV Golf, he is barred from competing in PGA Tour events. He only participates in the major championships.

Last year, Rahm entered this event as the defending champion. However, he fired scores of 73, 76, 72 and 76 in the four rounds. He failed to fire a single score below even par and finished T45 during his title defense.

The 2-time major champion once again had a tough time on the course. He started with a par-bogey-birdie-bogey on the first 4 holes, and after the first 8 holes, he was 2-over par. At the 9th hole, he hit a poor tee shot that led to him losing his cool.

As he walked away from the tee, he would vent his frustrations on his golf club. He nearly broke the club in half while smashing it over his knee. Check out a video regarding this below:

Rahm eventually made par on this hole and finished the front nine with a score of 2-over 38. He then finished the back nine while being 1-over 37 and shot a total score of 3-over 75 in the first round.

Former ESPN host takes jab at Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf move following struggling opening round at 2025 Masters Tournament

Jon Rahm shocked the golfing world in December 2023 when his move to LIV Golf was confirmed. The World No.1 had previously criticized the format of the league. A former ESPN host took a jab at the Spanish golfer following his struggles during the opening round of the 2025 Masters Tournament.

Rahm’s 3-over 75 score in the first round puts him in a tough spot. While being tied at 63th position, he will need a much better performance than this in the second round to avoid missing the cut in this prestigious event.

Sportscaster and former ESPN host Trey Wingo took to his X account to make his feelings known. He believes that the move to LIV Golf has “cratered” his career.

Jon Rahm was literally at the peak of his career before he took the money and ran to LIV. That move.. while making rich beyond his wildest dreams..has absolutely cratered his career and chances to compete in majors

Rahm joined LIV Golf on a reported $600 million deal. His move to them also saw the creation of the 13th team of the league, Legion XIII, which he captains. A few days after his move, Tyrrell Hatton also made his way to LIV Golf and joined his Ryder Cup teammate.

How has Jon Rahm performed in the majors since leaving the PGA Tour and joining LIV Golf?

Jon Rahm became a top name on the PGA Tour after several golfers left for LIV Golf. However, after defending the tour on several occasions, he too left them to play in the breakaway league. As a result of his move, the majors are the only times he is allowed to play on the PGA Tour circuit. How has he performed in these events, though?

In his first event back on the tour since his $600 million move, Rahm finished T45. This was his title defense at the Masters last year. During his win in 2023, he finished the event 12-under par, 4 strokes ahead of Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka.

He struggled during the PGA Championship at the Valhalla course last May. After carding a score of 70 in the first round, he posted a score of 72 in the second round. This was not enough though and he missed the cut.

He would then miss the U.S. Open, the other major event he has won, due to a foot injury. At the Open Championship, he finished T7, the highest finish at the major he had in 2024, with scores of 73, 70, 72 and 68.

As for LIV Golf, Rahm is currently 3rd in the individual standings behind Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann. Last season, he finished as the individual champion with two wins from the last three events.
