Jon Rahm Feeling ‘Confident’ About 2025 Open Championship Following Runner-up Finish at LIV Golf Andalucia

Jon Rahm has made the cut in all 3 major championships this year and would be hoping to extend that run with a top performance at the 153rd Open this week.

The spirits of Jon Rahm seem to be high at the moment. Following a runner-up finish at LIV Golf Andalucia at the Real Club Valderrama, the former World No.1 is feeling ‘confident‘ about the upcoming 2025 Open Championship at the Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

This past weekend, Rahm competed in his home country of Spain as LIV Golf hosted the LIV Golf Andalucia event. While playing in front of his home fans, the golfer gave it a huge push on the final day.

After firing scores of 71 and 70 in the first two rounds, the 2023 Masters Champion roared back to contention on Sunday. He fired a bogey-free round and made 6 birdies to post a score of 65 in the final round and left Talor Gooch needed a par on the final hole.

The American golfer would keep his cool, and with a score of 70 in the final round, he finished the tournament 8-under par to claim his 4th LIV Golf title and his first win since winning this same event in 2023. Rahm, meanwhile, finished the event 7-under par, one shot behind Gooch and had to settle for a runner-up finish in his homeland.

He now turns his attention to the final major of the year. In the press conference ahead of the 153rd Open, the Spanish golfer expressed confidence in him going all the way this coming weekend.

In a weird way, I always feel close. I’m always confident that I’m there. Last week, especially on Sunday, was very nice. It was a very good round of golf. It was by far my best round of Valderrama… So, feeling good, feeling confident. Hopefully, I can give it a run again this week.

Rahm has been in fine form this year and has made the cut in all 3 major events. At the Masters Tournament, he finished T14, while in the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open, he achieved top-10 finishes while finishing T8 and T7 respectively.

Jon Rahm advocates for LIV Golf to receive OWGR points

A few days ago, LIV Golf reapplied for the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) points. Former World No.1 Jon Rahm recently spoke on this and advocated for the league to receive these ranking points while claiming that they have a “high enough level of competition” to earn them.

The OWGR points are the official stat that ranks the players. Each week, players receive a specific amount of points depending on their performances which helps them rank in the world standings. The OWGR rankings are important as they hold the key to qualification for the major championships.

LIV Golf does not receive these ranking points. The league not only does not have a cut system in their tournaments, but the events on LIV Golf are played in a 54-hole format instead of a regular 72-hole structure.

All of this has led to the OWGR not granting them points. The league had previously applied for them under the leadership of former CEO Greg Norman. However, the then OWGR chairman Peter Dawson claimed that the league was not playing in a format where they “ranked equitably with the other 24 tours” and rejected their application.

With Scott O’Neil now in charge, the league has once again applied for these points. Speaking on this matter after the LIV Golf Andalucia, Rahm backed his league and hoped for positive news in the upcoming days.

I think what you’ve seen this week is a good level of golf. It deserves points. How many? I don’t know… There are good young players here who deserve the opportunity to qualify for the majors…I believe we have a high enough level of golf. And a high enough level of competition to earn world ranking points.

This year, LIV Golf did achieve some breakthroughs regarding the major championships. The league was able to find pathways to offer direct entry into the U.S. Open and the Open Championship through the individual standings.

If their application for OWGR points is granted, top names like Rahm can find themselves top of the standings once again. Since his move to them in December 2023, the Spanish international has fallen out of the top 50 in the OWGR rankings.
