It has been a rough start to the season for Stephen Curry‘s Golden State Warriors teammate, Jonathan Kuminga. The player has had issues with head coach Steve Kerr, who does not seem to trust the 23-year-old. Injuries have also played a role in hindering a player who was supposed to take the Warriors to the next level and help Curry and co. to contend for a championship.

But things have not gone according to plan. From being frozen out of the team to contract issues to a potential trade, Jonathan Kuminga‘s last two seasons have been tumultuous. As the key players of the Warriors are ageing, with Curry at 37, Jimmy Butler at 36 and Draymond Green at 35, the club needs a player like Kuminga to provide them with some much needed youth and athleticism.

The forward is currently averaging 12.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists. The 23-year-old was a starter in the first few games of the season but has struggled for minutes since his return from injury. He scored nine points in 20 minutes on Wednesday night in a close loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Kuminga made headlines once again as he went viral for an unexpected moment during the game while having a conversation with teammate, Gary Payton Jr. It was a humorous exchange between the teammates as Payton said, “I found her on the gram, I was like, ‘You tryna come to a game?’ She said yeah.”

To which Kuminga replied, “Oh, you gotta hit. Oh (expletive), come on bro (after noticing the fan).”

It turned into a spooky moment for Kuminga after he realized a fan was recording his moment with Payton.

Jonathan Kuminga is likely to be traded

A lot of drama has surrounded Kuminga’s future with the Warriors since the offseason. The Kuminga-Warriors affair has not gone according to plan. The forward was drafted as the seventh pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

The early days were promising, but injuries, and Kuminga’s issues with Kerr have stunted his growth. The plan was for Kuminga to share the offensive duties with Curry as the four-time champion enters the backend of his career.

The trade rumors surrounding Kuminga have surfaced again with several analysts and pundits predicting that the Warriors are planning to offload him soon. The franchise has slipped below .500 with their current record is 11-12 as they try to stay competitive in the absence of Curry due to injury.

But Kuminga is not eligible to be traded until January 15. While there will definitely be clubs who show interest in the young star, it will be interesting to see if the Warriors persist with him or use him as a part of a trade package.

Pat Spencer makes a case for himself

Nobody would have seen this coming. Not even Steve Kerr. But one of the stories of the 2025-26 season for the Warriors has been the rise of Pat Spencer. The 29-year-old is on a two-way contract with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA G League.

The guard has been averaging 6.3 points per game this season, including back-to-back double-digit points in their last two games without Curry. It was Spencer who orchestrated a near-comeback against the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, and had a similar impact against the 76ers.

Following the loss against the 76ers, Steve Kerr spoke about the guard in the press-conference.

Without Steph for sure he’s gotta be out there. It’ll be great to find a way to get him on the roster because he’s kind of the perfect guy to have as a backup. He can win you games like he almost did tonight. It would be great if we could find a way but it’s a little tricky.

Due to his two-way contract, the guard can play in 50 games this campaign and has already featured in 23 so far. Therefore, the Warriors will need to find a way to add him to the roster, especially if he continues to perform the way he has been performing.
