On Sunday, things got heated following the game between the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers. Goaltender Jonathan Quick was unhappy with the action of Red Wings’ forward Mason Appleton and jumped in to confront him which sparked a benches clearing brawl.
Quick had an impressive performance in this game. The Rangers goalie managed to make 40 saves in this match. Despite his heroics, the Rangers were unable to avoid a 2-1 defeat.
Having won 3 games in a row, the New York-based side were looking to make it 4 wins on the bounce. They did not have their head coach, Mike Sullivan, for this game as he was away due to some personal reasons.
After falling behind through a power-play goal from Alex DeBrincat in the 2nd period, the Rangers responded with a power-play goal of their own. Swedish international Mika Zibanejad fired in from close range just a couple of minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
Lucas Raymond would grab the game-winning goal in the third period. With 3:47 remaining in the third period at Madison Square Garden, he would turn around the net and was able to beat Quick for the 2nd time in the game.
As the Rangers tried to tie the game, they would pull out Quick and leave the net empty. This move did not work out well as they ended up dropping the game despite a 40-save performance from their goaltender.
It was after the game that chaos unfolded. Appleton would shoot the puck into the empty net after the final buzzer had gone.
As Appleton celebrated with his teammates, Quick would jump in and skate towards him. The Rangers goalie did not appreciate this action from the Red Wings star and tried to throw his hands at him. This sparked a benches clearing scrum between the two teams.

Players from both sides would throw in some punches while Quick was taken aside by one official. The 39-year-old goalie was going after Appleton, but Dylan Larkin got in the way and fought with him.

The buzzer is literally still going as he shoots it. Rangers (mainly quick) are just soft.

Benches only cleared because game was over, quick jumped off the bench to create the whole thing. Should get a suspension for leaving the bench

As a Rangers Fan this is a pathetic thing to fight over

Honestly had no issue with that shot. Quick is just taking out his frustrations for being the only Ranger to show up

I respect it
The rest of his team was going to let it happen and if it was the other way around I’d expect a reaction
And the “Captain of the Team” is just skating by with the attitude of “Yes sir, may I have another”. He needs to be called out heavily for that

Needless move by Appleton, but come on, Quick was on the bench. He's always had a short fuse.

Jonathan Quick defends Rangers teammate for jumping in following his outburst
Jonathan Quick found his name trending on social media after he decided to jump in and confront Mason Appleton for shooting the puck into an empty net after the buzzer had gone. The American international would defend his teammates for jumping in following his outburst.

After the initial exchange between Quick and Larkin, several Rangers star rushed forward to the scene. Several mini altercations broke in as players grabbed each other and threw in some pushes and punches.
While speaking with the reporters from the locker room after the game, Quick expressed that he does not know why they (Red Wings) were surprised with his reaction.
The horn goes, it was a couple seconds, and he shoots it. Don’t know why they were surprised, it’s usually the response when something like that happens. Boys jumped in, they did the right thing.
