Former Toronto Raptors and NBA player Jontay Porter could join younger brother in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud
Actions define legacies. Michael Porter Jr.‘s is that of being an NBA Champion and a star player. Unfortunately, his brother, Jontay Porter, has committed actions that have defined a different type of legacy. Those wrong actions have already led to his lifetime ban from the NBA. But his troubles aren’t over, as the former Toronto Raptors player could now face prison.
AP News reported that the former forward stood before a judge and pled guilty to a federal conspiracy crime. This was because he withdrew himself from games to enable bettors to make money. Prosecutors want Porter to face at least 3-4 years in prison. However, the presiding judge could rule for up to 20 years. The sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18th this year. However, the court issued a $250,000 bond, which if posted will allow him to rejoin society until his hearing.
That bond value is much more than what he or his co-conspirators made off of the bets placed. Porter did the right thing by pleading guilty, as the NBA as well as the federal agencies investigating the case have enough proof against him.
The NBA and the judicial system are holding up an ironclaw so far. The league is clear about its betting rule. No one associated with the league in any capacity can bet on games or players. The former Toronto Raptors player tried to bypass the strict rules to get out of his gambling debts.
Jontay Porter joins Coban Porter in prison
If Jontay Porter is sentenced, he will be the 2nd son from the Porter family to be incarcerated. That is after younger brother, Coban Porter started his 6-year term in prison. He pled guilty to killing a woman in a car crash while driving drunk back in 2023. He ran a red light even though it was on for a prolonged period.
Coban Porter was an aspiring basketball player attending Denver University at the time of the crash. But later dropped out as he was aware that he could be on his way to prison. A third brother, Jevon Porter was also arrested for DUI, but was released after a summon was issued. He too will face a judge at a later date.
Michael Porter Jr. is trying his best to help the family stay strong. As there is a possibility that he might not have at least 2 of his siblings around him for some time.
