Alex Ovechkin continued to script records on Wednesday. The Washington Capitals captain became the 1st player to score 900 goals in the NHL after he found the net against Jordan Binnington. The St. Louis Blues’ keeper tried to be sneaky and was caught stealing the puck.
Last year, Ovechkin finally chased down the goal-scoring record of Wayne Gretzky. “The Great Eight” turned back the clock during the 2024-25 campaign and vigorously started chasing down the 894 goals record of “The Great One.”
Despite breaking his ankle and missing a few weeks of injury, there was no stopping the engine of Ovechkin. On April 6, the veteran forward finally surpassed Gretzky.
In the game against the New York Islanders at the UBS Arena, Ovechkin would send a puck flying past his fellow Russian International Ilya Sorokin from his power-play office to make it a 3-0 game. He ended the campaign with 44 goals and was sitting at 897 career goals, 3 shy of the 900-goal mark.
The 900th goal took a while to come. Following his goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the 40-year-old went 4 games without a single point.
The milestone moment came in the 2nd period on Wednesday. It was not a typical Ovechkin goal, though. The forward would spin around and make a backhanded shot after the puck rebounded off the wall.

Celebrations would spark around the Capital One Arena in Washington following this goal. In the midst of this, Jordan Binnington tried to be sneaky.
The St. Louis Blues goaltender was seen hiding the 900th milestone puck from the officials. He would take the puck and drop it in his pants. Linesman Michel Cormier would later come across and retrieve the puck from him.

Yeah, I just saw it. I’m not going to comment.

Alex Ovechkin calls 900 goals as “special” moment
Alex Ovechkin founded the 900-goal club in the NHL on Wednesday as he scored a backhanded goal against the St. Louis Blues. Following the game, he labeled the 900 goals as a “special” moment of his career.

Following his goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets, he needed just one to reach the 900-goal mark. After that, he would go on a 4-game goalless drought, leading many to wonder when the milestone moment would arrive.
It arrived at the 2:39 mark in the 2nd period on Wednesday. The Capitals, who had lost 4 games in a row, needed a big response against the Blues. Ovechkin’s goal sparked a 4-goal 2nd period as the hosts blew away their opponents in this period.
After the game, the Russian admitted that he was thinking about this goal in the past few days.
I think a couple of days ago, somebody asked me, ‘Do you think about it?’ Of course. It’s a huge number. No one ever did it in NHL history. And to be the first player to ever do it, it’s a special moment. So yeah, it’s nice.
Alex Ovechkin said in the post-game conference
HE DID IT 😱
