Jordan Chiles’ mother and coach stand up against ‘racist disgusting comments’ following CHEATING allegations at Paris Olympics

Olympian Jordan Chiles recently made headlines on social media after her bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics. However, the celebrations turned sour after a user commented on her Instagram post, “The coaches cheated so Jordan could get a medal! What a coincidence.”

The controversy took over at the international level when Romania’s PM Marcel Ciolacu decided to boycott the closing ceremony at the Paris Olympics due to the “scandalous situation” that caused two of their athletes to lose their respective podium finishes.

Even Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci took to X commenting, “I can’t believe we play with athletes mental health and emotions like this.” Many were riled up seeing Ana Barbosu putting up her hand to celebrate her bronze medal win, only to look up to the scoreboard and see Jordan Chiles get a 0.1 boost ahead of her.

Many commented how this was all an act of conspiracy while others sympathized with the Romanian athlete. Following this incident, Chiles’ mother Gina Chiles stood up to protect her daughter stating,

My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched...and she's being called disgusting things.

She further added how she couldn’t believe these “racist disgusting comments” still exist in 2024. Prior to her, Chiles’ coach Cecile Landi penned on Instagram,

Jordan won this bronze medal and didn’t steal anything from anyone. I simply did my job and fought for my athlete…She EARNED that bronze medal.

According to AP News, inquiries are a standard part of gymnastics competition and Landi asking for a re-evaluation follows all the protocols in the Olympics. Based on an inquiry, a gymnast can be granted or denied additional points. Unfortunately, this rule stripped Barbosu’s bronze medal win and pushed Sabrina Maneca-Voinea to fifth place. 

Both are Romanian athletes and PM Marcel Ciolacu noted that they will be honored as Olympic medalists, “including in terms of the prizes”. He said, “your work and tears are more precious than any medal, no matter what precious metal they are from.”

Jordan Chiles reacts to winning bronze in floor routine at Paris Olympics

Jordan Chiles spoke about winning the bronze medal in the floor routine midst of a chaotic situation. Many thought it would be Ana Barbosu who would win the bronze, but after a re-evaluation, the results announced Chiles as the bronze medal winner.

In an interview on Today, Chiles recalled the moment noting how nerve-wracking it was and what an unbelievable feat it was for her to see her name at the top of the scoreboard. She said,

There were so many emotions going through my body in that moment. There was a lot of things happening to me not being on the podium to me being on the podium. I think the biggest thing is just always understanding not to doubt yourself, and just let everything ride out how it’s supposed to be.

She added how everyone was crying and was emotional at that moment. She thanked “big sister” Simone Biles for being there for her, and her “another mom” Cecile Landi. While one side was saddened to lose the stage finish medal, the other side celebrated their special moment.
