Jordan Chiles’ 2024 Olympic journey ends in heartbreak as USA Gymnastics appeal gets denied by CAS in latest ruling. The news came after the U.S. committee tried to re-appeal their case based on the new video evidence which showed Chiles coach Cecile Landi’s appeal was within the 1-minute mark.
The whole situation unfolded when Chiles initially got marked as the 5th place holder in the floor final routine, while Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu took 3rd place. However, Landi felt that the judges did not score Chiles’ difficulty properly and appealed for re-evaluation.

The result initially came in Chiles’ favor, leaving the Romanian heartbroken. However, after the Romanian Gymnastics Federation asked for a re-investigation, it was reported that Landi crossed the 1-minute mark by 4 seconds approximately.
The IOC later declared that Jordan Chiles had to return her bronze medal to Ana Barbosu and they will work with the USA Gymnastics and CAS to see the procedure done swiftly. However, a video later reached the USA Gymnastics where it was revealed that Landi had indeed asked for an appeal within 57 seconds.
Unfortunately, CAS announced that they will not be considering any further evidence and the matter will be closed by Barbosu being handed the bronze medal for the floor competition. This incident created chaos not only among athletes but also the sports community as a whole.
How this incident has affected the athlete’s mental health
Mental health has been a really serious topic among sports personalities nowadays. The most latest figure among them is Simone Biles who spoke about its importance after overcoming twisties following the 2021 Tokyo Games.

However, this current bronze medal controversy has taken a heavy toll on the athletes involved. Shortly after IOC declared that Jordan Chiles will have to give her medal to Ana Barbosu, the American gymnast took to social media stating that she’ll be “removing myself” from online space for mental health.
Even former gymnasts blasted the Olympic team for such mistakes and pointed out how the judges are the ones responsible for the mess. Even Barbosu stated,
The situation would not have existed if the persons in charge had respected the regulation. We, as athletes, are not to be blamed, and the hate directed to us is painful.Ana Barbosu as per Ryan Gaydos of Fox News.
Jordan Chiles deserved better than this. The point of any review in sports is to get it right.

The judges didn't at first, then they corrected it.

Since winning the medal, Chiles has been subjected to constant online criticism and even racist comments asking her to return the bronze medal to the rightful winner. Barbosu also said she wishes to “share the same podium” next Olympics and that “is my true dream.”
