The Green Bay Packers made several changes to their roster in the offseason, including the departure of running back Aaron Jones. After refusing to take a pay cut, the veteran decided to part ways earlier this year.
Jones’ career since entering the NFL has been filled with twists and turns. While the ability to deliver was always there, injuries kept him from reaching his full potential.
Last season was more or less the same. After missing out on the majority of the early regular season games, Jones made amends in the final 5 games including the playoffs. His 21 carries for 118 yards and 3 touchdowns rattled the Dallas Cowboys backfield in the NFC Wild Card round.
He was a commanding running back and a leader of the Packers’ locker room. Quarterback Jordan Love revealed that it was tough to hear that Jones left the franchise.
It was very tough. Aaron Jones is [such] a special player [and] a Special guy in this locker room since I’ve been here. Everyone loved Aaron, and it was very tough. It was one of those things that you can’t control.Jordan Love said per CBS Sports
Jones’ best season in Green and Yellow came in the 2019 season when he recorded a career-high 236 carries and finished with 16 rushing touchdowns which were the most in the league.
What measures did the Packers take to fill the space left by Aaron Jones?
Following his 7-year stint in Wisconsin, Aaron Jones found a new home in the NFC North, signing with the Minnesota Vikings. The 29-year-old agreed to a one-year $7 million deal with $4 million as a signing bonus per Spotrac.
The Packers did not waste much time and added free agent Josh Jacobs who left Vegas earlier this year. It’s not easy to replace a long-serving player, and it takes time for the new one to get accustomed to the playbook. Regardless, Love believes that Jacobs’ addition was splendid.
Obviously getting Josh [Jacobs] here has been awesome. Excited to see him on the field. He’s an awesome player. He’s been an awesome teammate so far. It’s been good getting to know him, and I’m excited to see what he can do this year.Jordan Love said
Jacobs, who is three years younger than Jones, bagged a four-year $48 million deal to play for the Packers. It includes a $12.5 million signing bonus along with a $12.5 million guaranteed. His annual salary will be $12 million per year.
