In Short
  • Matt LaFleur's contract with the Packers has been extended amid speculation about his job security.
  • Quarterback Jordan Love expressed happiness about continuing to work with LaFleur, emphasizing stability in the coaching system.
  • Love aims to improve the team's performance in the upcoming season after two consecutive wildcard round exits.

Even as recently as 2023, Matt LaFleur was regarded as untouchable within the Green Bay Packers organization. However, the situation in the NFL changes with every passing day. By the end of the 2024 season, speculation began to circulate that the Packers could consider parting ways with LaFleur if he did not achieve a Super Bowl victory in the next few years.

When the Packers squandered an 18-point lead to their division rivals, the Chicago Bears, in the wildcard round and lost 31-27, alarm bells started ringing throughout the league.

Quarterback Jordan Love threw three touchdowns before halftime, taking a 21-3 lead. The Bears reduced the score to just five points before Love added his fourth. Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams, who turned the ball over twice in the game, tossed two touchdown passes, including a 25-yard pile driver to wide receiver DJ Moore, to secure a memorable victory.

LaFleur’s job hung in the balance at this point. Then came the surprising news. In the same month, the Packers extended the contracts of not only LaFleur but also general manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball.

Packers CEO Ed Policy told the Packers website,

While we are all disappointed with the way this season ended, we remain aligned in purpose and have spent considerable time over the past weeks collaborating on a path forward. I am exceedingly confident we have the right people to achieve our goal. The entire Packers organization looks forward to supporting every effort to bring our community and fans another championship that they very much deserve.

Love reacted to LaFleur’s extension during a recent charity event. The Pro Bowl signal caller is glad that he gets to continue his growth under the 46-year-old’s tutelage.

[Matt LaFleur] has been my head coach since I got [Green Bay] here; that’s the coach who drafted me. So, being able to keep Matt around is awesome. I’m very happy about that. I think anytime in the NFL—I’ve done this in college—where the coaches leave and you’re in a new system, it’s tough. It’s a lot to be able to learn a whole new system, a new terminology.

The specific details about LaFleur’s contract are under wraps. For now, the only information available is that it’s a multi-year deal.

Jordan Love is ready to work with Matt LaFleur to win a Super Bowl

Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy were the last quarterback-head coach duo to win the Super Bowl for the Packers in 2011. LaFleur replaced McCarthy in 2019 and drafted Love a year later. However, the Utah State graduate sat behind the four-time league MVP for the first four years of his career before taking over as the starter in 2023 when Rodgers left for New York.

That very year, the Packers reached the Divisional playoff final, losing to the San Francisco 49ers. Shortly after, Love signed a four-year, $220M deal. Love led the Packers to an 11-6 and 9-7-1 season, with both ending in defeats in the wildcard round. He wants 2026 to be different.

For a quarterback to be able to stay in the same system and keep the same terminology. It definitely helps me and my teammates out that we can hit the ground running when we get to OTAs [organized team activities] and just build off what we’ve done the last couple years.
