3-time major champion Jordan Spieth is still chasing a Ryder Cup spot and trying to make a final push. Ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which will kick off the 3-event PGA Tour playoffs, Spieth hilariously urged U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley to “give up” a pick.

After every tournament, golfers are awarded Ryder Cup points based on their performances. The top 6 golfers in the Ryder Cup standings automatically qualify for the event. A total of 6 golfers are then selected by the captain.

This year, the role of captaincy has been given to Bradley. The 8-time PGA Tour winner, who missed out on the event last time out, was named as the successor of Zach Johnson in 2024 after the former Masters Champion was let go from his position.

So this time, Bradley gets to decide the 6 other golfers. One issue in this is that he himself is eligible for the tournament. With some top performances and a stunning win at the 2025 Travelers Championship, the US Captain is ranked 10th in the standings.

This allows Bradley the option to back himself up and take on the role of playing captain. While he has not made any decision regarding this as of yet, Jordan Spieth has hilariously tried to scare him off the duties he would need to take on as the playing captain and urged to give up that pick.

I keep trying to convince Keegan that it’d be a lot for him to have to play, too. So he probably should give up that pick, even if he’s a top 10 player and a top 7 player in the world. Just seems like way too much to have to do. So, trying to open up all the opportunities I can, but I can also go take care of business myself

Jordan Spieth said on SiriusXM PGA Tour radio

Spieth himself needs to play better, too. After returning to action at the AT&T Pebble Beach following a horrific injury, the former World No.1 has taken part in 18 events.

He has achieved 4 top-10 finishes while making cuts in 16 of them. Before the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he is ranked 27th in the Ryder Cup standings and needs a top performance in Memphis to move up the rankings and catch the eye of Bradley.

Jordan Spieth has backed Keegan Bradley to take up on the playing captain role

As the playoff season gets underway on the PGA Tour, the excitement for the upcoming Ryder Cup has also started going up a notch. While Jordan Spieth recently joked about Keegan Bradley giving up the idea of picking himself as a part of Team USA in that biennial event, he had previously backed him to take on that role.

Bradley caused a massive stir in the golf community as he emerged as the winner of the 2025 Travelers Championship. The 2011 PGA Championship winner came from behind and stunned Englishman Tommy Fleetwood to capture his 2nd win in 3 years at the Travelers Championship.

Since that win, there have been several talks of Bradley taking on the playing captain role. Many players have backed him for this. He himself expressed that things have changed a bit following his triumph in June.

When asked about the choice of Bradley naming himself as one of the picks, Jordan Spieth on the Ups & Adams Shows backed the 39-year-old and expressed that if he was one of the top-12 American players, then he should be on the team.

As of right now, if he’s playing as a top-12 American player, then he should be on that team, in my opinion…If this guy’s going to be one of the best ten players at that tournament, which is how he (Bradley) is playing right now, then of course you want him.

Only time will tell whether Bradley decides to back himself up and take on the playing role, too. If he does do that, he will become the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. The late great would lead the Americans to a 23-9 victory over Great Britain that year.

As of now, only Scottie Scheffler has automatically qualified for the Ryder Cup from the US side. From the European end, World No.2 Rory McIlroy has also qualified, making the two top players in the world the only ones to officially book their spots before the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
