After a good opening round, Masvidal was dominated by Usman’s wrestling and forced to spend long stretches of the bout pinned up against the cage. It was a clear unanimous decision win for Usman.

After the bout, Masvidal was quick to say that he’d make the necessary adjustments and return and that a full camp would produce a better performance.

And now, nearly month after the loss, Masvidal is beating the drum for another shot at welterweight gold. The damage” Masvidal is referring to is a potentially broken nose on Usman.

Following the fight, the welterweight champion was issued a potential six-month suspension by the UFC unless Usman cleared a nasal X-ray. Masvidal emerged from the bout unscathed and is ready to get right back in there.

From the tenor of his message though, it’s unclear if Masvidal is calling for a rematch with Usman or if “move the division forward” means a bout with someone else while Usman is sidelined due to injury.

Edward’s wants Masvidal

What is clear though is that Leon Edwards wants to fight Masvidal. Edwards is currently the No. 3 ranked welterweight in the UFC.

He has not fought since July 2019 when he defeated Rafael dos Anjos, but overall he has won eight straight fights and is highly regarded by fans and media. The next fight for Edwards will more than likely be a No. 1 contender fight for an upcoming title shot at 170lbs.

 Edward’s Tweet

Taking to his social media on Sunday, Edwards called for a fight against his rival Masvidal and also did the matchmaking for the rest of the welterweight division.

At this point, it’s hard to say if Masvidal would be interested in fighting Edwards. It seems like Masvidal is still gunning after a rematch with Usman, plus he said that he doesn’t plan on fighting until November or December.

However, if this potential matchup between Masvidal and Edwards is something the UFC wants to book, then the matchmakers will be able to get it done.
