On Tuesday, things got a bit out of hand between Jorge Soler and Reynaldo Lopez. During the Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Angels game, the two of them were involved in a heated scrum. Both of these stars were later slapped with multiple game suspensions.
The Angels, who had won the series opener on Monday, were aiming to 2nd successive series victory with a win on Tuesday. In the bottom of the first inning, Soler put the Angels 2-0 up with a 2-run home run of Lopez.
This marked the 5th time the former Braves star had homered against Lopez. This saw his record against the right-handed pitcher improve to 14-for-23.

In the third inning of the game, Soler got hit by a pitch from Lopez. A 96 mph fastball would hit the 2-time World Series winner on the hand, leading to him advancing to first base.
During his next at-bat, he would take a high fastball just near his face. Braves’ catcher Jonah Heim would miss the ball, allowing Nolan Schanuel to slide into second base. After this, things got heated between Soler and Lopez as they both stared each other down.
Moments later, the two started exchanging haymakers. Lopez, who still had the ball in his hand, would hit Soler on the helmet. The benches immediately got cleared in an attempt to stop the brawl.

Braves manager Walt Weiss tackled Soler in an effort to stop him. After some words from his ex-teammate Ozzie Albies, the Angels star calmed down. Once things got settled, both Soler and Lopez were ejected from the game by Vic Carapazza.
The Braves went on to win the game 7-2 and level the series. On Wednesday, the MLB handed out a 7-game suspension to both of these stars.

Sportscaster takes brutal dig at Angels following Jorge Soler-Reynaldo Lopez fight
Jorge Soler and Reynaldo Lopez stole the show on Tuesday night with their fierce brawl. A sportscaster later took a brutal dig at the Los Angeles Angels following this brawl between the two former Atlanta Braves teammates.

Many users on social media criticized Lopez for his actions. They called him out for throwing punches at the Angels star with the ball in this hand.
While reacting to this fight, sportscaster Stephen A. Smith took a jibe at the Angels. During the discussion of this event on First Take, the 58-year-old claimed it was nice of the team to do something “relevant.”
It’s nice for the Angels to do something relevant. I mean, they ain’t been in the postseason since 2014. They haven’t had a winning record since 2015. … Do something to have us interested right now on this season; they’re on a fast track to pretty much nowhere yet again.

It is not the first time Smith had thrown a punch at the Angels. In 2023, he called the AL West team “irrelevant” amidst trade rumors regarding Shohei Ohtani. He would face some backlash from MLB fans regarding this take.
Smith, however, is correct about the Angels’ poor run in the past decade. Their last playoff appearance came in 2014, when they got swept in the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Kansas City Royals.
The following year, they finished with an 85-77 record but finished 3rd in the AL West standings. Since that season, the team has not finished a single season with a winning record. Last year, they finished bottom of the standings with a 72-90 record.
This year, they were 6-5 following the win on Monday. With back-to-back losses, they once again have a negative record. Their next assignment sees them face Cincinnati Reds before taking on the New York Yankees.
