Gujarat Titans star and England international Jos Buttler revealed the embarrassment that he faced, after having dropped an easy catch, during the team’s IPL encounter against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He later added that it fueled fire in him to perform well with the bat.
Jos Buttler was the star of the GT batting unit. He helped his side claim an impressive eight wicket victory over high-flying RCB. Batting first, RCB, in their first home game of the season, managed to post a below-par total of just 169 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Ex-RCB star Mohammed Siraj, in his very first appearance against his former side, scalped three crucial wickets in his four-over spell.
In response, Gujarat Titans went on a rampage, as they chased down the total in just 17.5 overs. Sai Sudharsan continued with his good batting form, scoring 49 runs off 36 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford contributed with 30 runs off 18 balls. However, Jos Buttler stole the show, scoring an unbeaten 73 runs off just 39 deliveries. He slammed five boundaries and six sixes, and scored at a strike rate of 187.18.
However, the English wicket-keeper was at fault in the first innings of the match. In the first over of the match bowled by Mohammed Siraj, Buttler, who was wicket-keeping for GT, dropped Phil Salt’s easy catch. Siraj bowled a quick short delivery to challenge Salt, who stepped forward and swung his bat. However, the English opener missed the ball and it edged past his bat towards the keeper.

To everyone’s surprise, Jos Buttler missed the catch as it slipped through his hands. The ball hit him on his chest instead. Salt missed catch however did not prove costly, as he was dismissed by Siraj in the fifth over for just 14 runs. Realizing his blunder, the veteran wicket-keeper, who was bought by GT at the 2025 Mega Auction for INR 15.75 crores, immediately apologized to captain Shubman Gill and Siraj.

Meanwhile, Jos Buttler’s batting display overshadowed his struggles with the gloves. Speaking after the match, the 34-year-old stated that he was ‘pretty embarrassed’ after having made the error. He added that the missed opportunity gave him determination to score the winning runs for his team. The English white-ball skipper exclaimed that he tried to play with freedom and intent, and was trying to give his best.
I don’t know, pretty embarrassed. We know [Phil] Salt is a dangerous player. I barely got a glove on it and it hit me in the chest, so I was determined to score some runs.

Moreover, the former Rajasthan Royals opener’s struggle did not end with Salt’s missed catch. In the 10th over of the first innings bowled by Rashid Khan, he also missed a stumping opportunity of RCB star Liam Livingstone. Livingstone later went to score 54 runs off 40 deliveries for the home side.
