Jose Mourinho was recently sacked from his role as manager at Roma after a poor run in the league, Leading them to the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022, he was sacked on 16th January 2024 as the club slipped to 9th place. 

Despite now having a club as of now, reports suggest the Portuguese manager has decided on his next destination, a return to his former club. According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho has “unfinished business” at Manchester United, which is currently struggling.

According to Daily Mail, a source close to the manager has said Mourinho wants to work under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, who recently acquired a 25% stake in the club. Mourinho’s mission is to return for the unfinished business he had and aims his next job to be in the club. Mourinho had joined United in 2016 but was fired in December 2018 after a string of poor performances.

Currently, Manchester United is managed by Erik ten Hag, who has been having a below-par season. The Red Devils lie 9th in the league, are eliminated from the Champions League, and are only in contention for the FA Cup. Many reports also claim Ten Hag has lost the dressing room due to his coaching style.  

Jose Mourinho’s time at Manchester United 

Being sacked by Chelsea in 2015, Jose Mourinho joined the English giants. Manchester United the very next year. In his first transfer window, he got stars like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba to join. He won the double that season, winning the League Cup and Europa League.

In his 2nd season, he managed to get Manchester United to 2nd, but finished 2nd with a points difference of 19 points. Later they went on to the FA Cup finals but lost to his former club, Chelsea. Mourinho has often called finishing 2nd with that United team his “greatest achievement”.

In his 3rd and final season with Manchester United, he lasted only 6 months before getting the sack. The club was stuck at 6th, with reports of Mourinho losing the dressing room. After a 3-1 loss at Anfield, he was removed from his role on 18th December 2019. He was eventually replaced by former United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. 

After leaving United he joined Tottenham Hotspurs, where he lasted for 17 months before being fired. It was also the first time Mourinho had gone a single season without a trophy. After a 3-year stint with Roma, he is finally free to join other clubs.
