The 2025 divisional round defeat left a big question mark on Lamar Jackson’s ability to kill off games. Despite containing Josh Allen for most of the game, the 29-year-old came clutch in the final moments.

Fans eagerly waited for the next war between these two incredible athletes. The NFL obliged by pitting Allen and Jackson against each other in the opening week of the 2025 season.

Initially, the Ravens played a better game. Jackson threw two touchdowns, scored one on the ground, and set up Derrick Henry for two scores, giving the Ravens a fourteen-point lead with five minutes from the final whistle of third quarter.

Josh Allen came alive in the fourth quarter, completing three touchdowns (2 passing and one rushing) and achieving a passer rating of over 100 to secure a narrow one-point win.

This result reignited a debate that has been raging since the divisional game. It played a big factor in the outcome of the MVP voting, which went in favor of Allen. Outraged fans argued Jackson had the better numbers and deserved the crown.

The narrative remained the same when the two met at Highmark Stadium on Sunday. Allen played lights-out football to secure his second win over Jackson within a few months.

Football analyst Emmanuel Acho believes this win confirmed Allen’s superiority and that he deserved the MVP crown. Allen went up against one of the defensive units in the league with Pro Bowler-caliber players: Roquan Smith, Marlon Humphrey, Kyle Hamilton, Jaire Alexander, Nate Wiggins (first-round pick 2024), and Malaki Starks (first-round pick 2025).

Josh Allen went to war against an army of freaks, beasts, All-Pro, and he put up 41 points against them… Against that Ravens defense, who I would suggest has the best tandem of cornerbacks and safeties in all of football.

Acho further highlighted Allen’s lack of top talent on the Bills offense. Unlike the previous years, he doesn’t have luxury wide receivers such as Stefon Diggs (Patriots) and Amari Cooper (retired). Allen won the game with a second-year rookie, Keon Coleman; Khalil Shakir, who had 821 yards and 4 TDs in 2024; and Dalton Kincaid, whose highlight reel contains a crucial drop in the 2024 AFC title game.

Josh Allen creates history by defeating the Ravens

Allen wanted a fresh start to the new season by keeping last year’s disappointment behind him. The Ravens put up a good fight, but the 2x All-Pro shot caller carved out a memorable victory.

Allen wrote his name in the Bills’ history books by logging the most rushing touchdowns ever. He became only the sixth quarterback ever with 400+ yards passing and rushing, 4+ TD runs/passes, and 0 turnovers in Week 1. Associated Press’ Josh Dubow listed the names of the other five quarterbacks.

Dak Prescott 2019 vs Giants, Ryan Fitzpatrick 2018 vs Saints, Andrew Luck 2016 vs Lions (lost), Peyton Manning 2013 vs Ravens, Phil Simms 1983 vs Eagles.

Allen’s 251 passing yards in the fourth quarter (since 1991) are the second most behind retired Bengals QB Boomer Esiason, 252 vs. Washington in 1996.

This was a statement win for Allen and the Bills. It’s very significant because all of their AFC East rivals suffered defeat in their week one fixtures. More importantly, Allen took a big step ahead of the rest of the chasing pack in the MVP race.
