Josh Allen and Bills moving on from ‘selfish’ plays involving Stefon Diggs to team football has paid dividends

Stefon Diggs leaving was expected to hurt Josh Allen and his young Buffalo Bills receiving core, but has so far proved otherwise.

Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have destroyed all preconceived notions about their team. Fans and analysts thought they would ride the year out and then play well next season. Especially the loss of Stefon Diggs was seen as one major reason they would struggle.

However, their 10th win of the season helped them win the AFC East and punch a ticket to the playoffs. Now they have not only overcome the loss of Diggs, but also showed that a team does not always need a diva wide receiver to win.

In fact, that diva nature of Stefon Diggs was seen as the reason for the fractured Bills locker room. GM Brandon Beane not only helped Diggs move to another contender but also cleared the team off a lot of star veterans. Seeing the current form of Josh Allen’s team, ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky feels the Buffalo Bills have worked on their goal amidst the fallout of last season.

When Buffalo made the decision to move on from Stefon Diggs, last night was the game that they envisioned, I believe. We’ve heard all season long off ‘oh this is a different football team, no one really cares who gets the stats, everybody is bought in’. They are a legit ‘win in any way’ Super Bowl contender, that they haven’t been in the past.

Dan Orlovsky said on NFL Live

The former QB did mention that the Bills changed their offensive philosophy to ensure their players play together. That means no one is particularly worried about their personal stats as long as they keep winning.

In return, Orlovsky feels it has elevated the team to where not only the wide receiver group, but every other group of players has elevated themselves. Now their collective mentality means they could be legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

Josh Allen and Bills showing how a team should play football

With Stefon Diggs gone, many believed there will be growing headaches for rookie wideout Keon Coleman and the Buffalo Bills offense as a whole. However, head coach Sean McDermott gave OC Joe Brady the freedom to expand on last season’s positives.

Brady changed things, which disgruntled their former wideout. He saw less and less of the ball and vented his frustrations when it did not happen. That redistribution helped the team win the six games to close out last season before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs.

By continuing that philosophy, they have distributed the pressure across the offense. That distribution saw them win convincingly against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 13. It is games of that magnitude that show how a team can play together to overcome any deficits.

The addition of Amari Cooper helped them push the needle a bit more. Now, their young receivers had a veteran to lean on. Not the diva esque leadership of Diggs, rather a calm and poised one of Cooper who has elevated every team he has been on. If this continues, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills could upset a few favorites.
