A week ago, Josh Allen and Sean McDermott were left devastated after the Buffalo Bills collapsed against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional round game.
The quarterback was in tears, and the head coach was unable to explain what truly went wrong. McDermott knew that the national media would go after his most important player, but the saddened look on everyone’s face saved them.
That, however, did not save him from the Bills’ owner, Terry Pegula, who fired Sean McDermott the next day, and even went to the extent of blaming him for Keon Coleman‘s non-performance and other mistakes.
This season was not a good time to hire a head coach, as not many good candidates were available, and those who were had already signed on to other jobs.
Josh Allen was tasked to assist GM Brandon Beane and Pegula to hire their next head coach. They managed to line up some interviews, one with former offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, and another, surprisingly, with Philip Rivers.

Ultimately, both were out of the race, either believing another job was better or voluntarily. When it started to dawn that the Buffalo Bills were running out of options, Ian Rapoport confirmed that they promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
Fans react to Josh Allen getting Joe Brady as next head coach
Joe Brady has been linked with quite a few head coaching jobs in the past. The coordinator is highly revered and is known for his offensive genius, even though last season was a mess.
However, football fans felt that this promotion was a downgrade from Sean McDermott. They questioned if this was at all necessary, as the fired head coach had proved he was a capable leader.
Now, Josh Allen will be stuck with having less of Brady as an offensive coordinator and more of a game manager. With confused thoughts, fans took to social media to express their opinions, examples of which are below.
Awful. You downgrade from McDermott to this? Bills as dysfunctional as the Browns

How does this move the needle for the Bills?

I’ll answer my own question.
It doesn’t.
What a joke. Fire one of the best head coaches and hire this scrub?

Why fire Sean to promote the OC?

Sean McDermott is way better than this guy. Sorry Bills fans.

I think promoting from within was a good idea, the big mistake was firing McDermott 🤦♂️

Awesome now they can blame him for Josh's INTs! Congrats Joe!

Joe Brady might turn out to be the best option, as he saw firsthand how his former boss ran the place. Now, he will be able to bring his ideas into the fold and help Josh Allen and his teammates take the next step towards a Super Bowl.
Bills potentially gave Joe Brady the job out of fear of losing out
As mentioned above, the availability of top coordinators was a bit of a problem. Then, they compounded when the Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi after their loss in the AFC Championship game.

Context for the Bills’ hiring Joe Brady as HC: He was a wanted man. — Brady was very high on the Ravens’ list for OC. — Sean Payton wanted Brady as OC, perhaps even with play-calling. Instead, the Bills make sure he stays.

This means that Sean Payton wanted a different coordinator on his staff after dismissing one he felt was to blame for their loss to the New England Patriots.

On top of that, newly-hired Baltimore Ravens’ head coach Jesse Minter wanted Joe Brady for a similar role. That probably pushed the Bills to promote their own instead of waiting around and missing out.
