Josh Allen lost to the Kansas City Chiefs again. In the 2023/24 season, Allen and the Buffalo Bills succumbed to a late defeat in the divisional round, and on Sunday they crashed out of the AFC championship game. It was Allen’s fourth straight defeat against Patrick Mahomes and Co. in the postseason.
ESPN’s NFL Prime Time afterward co-host Booger McFarland said Allen must be thinking about whether he was born in an era to be a quarterback. The 28-year-old has a better record (4-1) against Mahomes in the regular season, but he falls short during the business end of the season.
"I think Josh Allen has to ask himself, 'Was I born in the wrong era?' 'Cause Mahomes is not going anywhere… [The Bills] gotta figure out a way to get over the hump…" – Booger McFarland, who also compared the situation to Michael Jordan vs other NBA stars in the '90s. #NFL pic.twitter.com/x7YhovBV2l

McFarland provided an example of the Michael Jordan era in the NBA. The 2x Super Bowl winner said there were several other great players besides Jordan when he played basketball for the Chicago Bulls.
Allen played a great game against the Chiefs, completing 64% of passes for 237 yards and 2 touchdowns. McFarland argued that he still needs weapons in the offense—an out-and-out wide receiver one. Stefon Diggs was cut, and so far the Amari Cooper gamble hasn’t worked out. If the Bills brass don’t add quality players up front, then Allen will continue to remain in Mahomes’ shadow.
Josh Allen understands it’s hard to win Super Bowls
The Bills went as underdogs at Arrowhead despite handing the Chiefs their first defeat of the 2024 season. Allen contributed 2 touchdowns and completed 67% of his passes in the week 11 win in Buffalo.
A similar performance would have sufficed in the championship game but turnovers, a dropped catch, and a few questionable decisions from the referee contributed to the Bills’ defeat. After the game, Allen looked devastated by the outcome.
Allen acknowledged that it’s never easy winning the big one, especially against a team that has an established winning culture.
Allen led the Bills to a franchise record 13 wins including wins against the Lions, Ravens, and Broncos. The 2x All-Pro completed 4200+ overall yards, 42 overall touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions.
