Josh Allen signed a $258 million contract extension with the Buffalo Bills back in 2021 after leading them to consecutive AFC Divisional playoff rounds with a perfect passer rating of 149.0. However, tons of water have passed through the Buffalo River since then, and Allen is no longer the top 10 highest-paid players in the NFL.

While his fellow AFC quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert are earning $50 million annually, Allen is taking home only $43 million a year. On paper, the number is extremely low compared to players who have achieved less and yet are earning the top dime—Deshaun Watson, who has $230 million in guaranteed money for spending most of his time in Cleveland on the hospital bed.

When asked whether it affects him or not that he is earning less compared to other players, Allen said he was happy that players were getting paid.

The 2x pro bowler accepted he has had his day and other players deserved to earn their money as well. He has no hard feelings; rather, he is focused on winning games for the Bills.

Breaking down Josh Allen’s contract and when he will be eligible for a new one?

Allen is currently behind a lot of people and not just quarterbacks. He will gradually start to earn less as the new season approaches, even less than the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa, and Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones.

In 2024, Allen is set to earn $8.625 million as a base salary and has a cap hit of $30 million. After 2025, he will be eligible for a new deal, and the following 3 years could become void; if the Bills don’t sign him, then he will leave $31.565 million in dead cap money per Spotrac.

Allen, like most quarterbacks, doesn’t keep tabs on the intricacies of his contract, which is his agent’s job, but he knows the beneficiaries of an improved deal. The Chiefs sorted out Patrick Mahomes’ initial 10-year deal, allowing them to siphon off some money that they used to pay Jones.

Whether the Bills apply the same policy is up to General Manager Brandon Beane. For now, Allen’s primary motivation and target is winning a Super Bowl, and if it does, then perhaps Beane will be swayed to increase the 28-year-old’s salary.
