The name ‘Josh Allen’ often gets too confusing since both the Buffalo Bills star quarterback and Jacksonville Jaguars’ star defensive player have the same first and last name. But this morning, the latter took the bold step and changed his legal name.
The Jaguars officially announced the news on Tuesday that their best defensive player has changed his name from ‘Josh Allen’ to ‘Joshua Hines-Allen.’ Therefore, in the upcoming 2024 NFL season, the two-time Pro Bowler will be seen wearing a new moniker on the back of his jersey.
The Bills signal-caller will continue with his original name, but Hines-Allen wants to build his legacy by his unique name. He shared that his new name is a “tribute to Joshua’s maternal side of the family and the other relatives who have worn ‘Hines’ and ‘Hines-Allen’ on their jerseys.”
His sister, WNBA player Myisha, has already using ‘Hines-Allen’ as her last name for quite some time now. Interestingly, ‘Hines’ holds its own legacy as Joshua’s uncle Gregory Hines, who played for Golden State Warriors after being drafted by them in 1983, was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Hampton University.
Legacy is forever, and I'm proud to carry that tradition on the back of my jersey, following in the footsteps of my family, who have donned the Hines-Allen last name with so much pride and joy.Joshua Hines-Allen said via Instagram
Hines-Allen assured his fans that though his name has changed, he hasn’t, and in the upcoming season, he aims to play even better than in 2023.
Jaguars lock up Joshua Hines-Allen with massive $150M extension
The Jaguars’ star is coming off one of the best seasons of his career by recording a career-best 17.5 sacks in 2023. And to reward Hines-Allen for his success, the Jaguars offered him a lucrative extension as he deserved.
Following the 2023 NFL season, Allen was set to enter the free agency market but the Jaguars weren’t ready to risk losing their best player so they offered him a mammoth deal for five years worth $150 million, including $88 million guaranteed, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
This contract enlisted Hines-Allen among the highest-paid players at his position. The Jaguars had initially put a franchise tag on the linebacker for one year worth $24 million, which was replaced by this lucrative extension.
