The University of Wyoming football program gave alumnus Josh Allen its highest honor by retiring his jersey number. Allen saw a great opportunity to call out Wyoming’s biggest rivals and took it.
On Saturday, college football entered week 13, as the Wyoming Cowboys hosted the Nevada Wolf Pack at the War Memorial Stadium. Prior to the showdown, the program hosted a ceremony to felicitate one of its greatest sons.
Allen spent three years with the Cowboys before heading off to the NFL to play for the Buffalo Bills. Multiple All-Pro, Pro Bowls, and an NFL MVP accolade later, he returned to his old stomping ground with his superstar wife, Hailee Steinfeld, to see his name being immortalized.

The university retired Allen’s number 17 jersey, a number he still proudly wears to this day. Draped in the colors of the program, Allen took center stage just before the kickoff for a thank-you speech.
First off, I just want to say thank you everybody for coming out tonight. This is such an amazing honor, a huge blessing. There’s so many people that I can thank for this achievement. A lot of teammates here. Love you guys.

Allen ended his speech by taking a dig at Wyoming’s biggest rivals, the Colorado State Rams.
It will always suck to be a CSU Rams fan.

Allen went 2-0 against the Rams. He racked up 17 completions for 300+ passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, 22 carries with the ball for 100+ rushing yards, and 1 score.
The Wyoming and Colorado State Rams (or Colorado Agricultural) showdown, or better known as the Border War, was first played all the way back in January 1911. The Rams lead the series 60-51-5, but the Cowboys have won 8 of the last 10 games.
In week 9, Wyoming thumped the Rams 28-0, with quarterback Kaden Andreson throwing 2 touchdowns. However, the Cowboys failed to replicate the same vigor in front of Allen and Steinfeld. Nevada won the game 13-7.
Josh Allen’s record at Wyoming
Allen graduated from Firebaugh High School in California with the intention of playing Division 1 college football. Despite racking up decent numbers, he received zero offers from D1 colleges, including FCS teams.

His family background as farmers played a big part. According to an article from Yahoo Sports, Jeff Eisenberg,
At a time when many scholarship-hungry families encourage their kids to specialize in one sport or to transfer to the school that will provide the most exposure, the Allens resisted both trends. They spurned overtures from more prominent Central Valley programs after Allen’s breakout junior season and kept him at Firebaugh, living by the family mantra that “you bloom where you’re planted.”
Allen turned to Juco Football (Junior College) as a zero-star recruit. The higher-ups at Reedley College in California found Allen’s playstyle fit their mantra. He went 2-4 from six starts, but his numbers were off the charts. Allen threw 2055 yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions, along with 660 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Wyoming showed interest in his services. In three years, Allen went 16-10, threw 365 completions for 5066 yards, 44 passing touchdowns, 21 INTs, 767 yards on the ground, and 12 rushing touchdowns.
Once a Poke, always a Poke.

In 2018, Allen was part of the same draft class as Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Rosen. He was drafted seventh overall by the Bills, and he has been the starter for the AFC East franchise ever since.
Allen is 83-38 as the QB1 with the Bills. He threw 2524 pass completions for 29,143 yards, 213 touchdowns, 93 INTs, 4513 rushing yards, and 75 rushing touchdowns on the ground. Allen is 7-6 in the postseason.
