Josh Allen edges past Lamar Jackson to win the 2024 NFL MVP (Most Valuable Player). The Buffalo Bills quarterback was present with girlfriend and Hollywood star Hailee Steinfeld in New Orleans to receive the honors after pulling his name out of the Pro Bowl games.

Allen and Jackson were neck and neck going into the last day of the season. The Bills’ loss to the Patriots on the final day of the season dented Allen’s chances slightly.

The former seventh overall pick assumed the driver’s seat after the Bills defeated the Ravens in the AFC Divisional round. Allen contributed two touchdowns, and from then on, he leaped over Jackson as the favorite for his maiden NFL MVP trophy.

For the majority of the 2024 season, Jackson remained the favorite to win his third MVP trophy after bagging the best football player award the previous year. He made a strong case after averaging 8.8 yards, throwing for 4172 yards, 41 passing touchdowns, and just four interceptions with a passer rating of league-high 119.6. He further contributed 139 rushes for 915 yards (6.6 yards per carry, most by a quarterback) for four rushing touchdowns.

Allen, on the other hand, completed 307 passes with a completion rate of 63.6% for 3713 yards, 28 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions with a passer rating of 101.4. He further added 12 touchdowns on the ground including six in post season. It was enough to pip Jackson for his first-ever NFL MVP title.

After receiving the award Allen revealed that he did not anticipate winning it over Lamar Jackson.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised [because] given what we know about, typically, how the voting goes. Lamar was very deserving of this award as well. I have nothing but love and respect for him and his game.

Allen became the only second quarterback to be named MVP without also being an Associated Press first-team All-Pro in the same season. Before him, it was Denver Broncos QB John Elway, who won ahead of 49ers Joe Montana in 1987.
