Manchester United landed Joshua Zirkzee in a £34 million transfer from Bologna last month in order to reinforce their attacking unit that already features the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford. He is still to feature for the Red Devils after getting an extended off on the back of Euros.
Despite not being a part of the pre-season, Zirkzee may have been given the hint about what is the position that he is going to play at Old Trafford and his latest statement to the Mirror may have had all the fans of Manchester Unit in a knot, trying to unravel, what the Dutch attacker had to say.
I occasionally drop down to midfield. I don't do that for myself but to help the team. I am what I call a false striker. Not a No 9, not a No 10. I am a 9.5! That's my game. Maybe I'm a little different than others. But being different is good, right?Joshua Zirkzee told The Mirror
As per the inside reports, Zirkzee is probably going to get his first start against Fulham in the Premier League opener for Manchester United. With Hojlund still recovering from the injury that he picked up against Arsenal in the pre-season friendlies, Zirkzee’s addition to the squad will be a massive boost to the side’s striking caliber.
Manchester United’s latest targets in the summer window
Rasmus Hojlund wasn’t the only one to pick an injury in the pre-season. Manchester United’s latest signing, Leny Yoro was also sidelined for three months with a metatarsal injury. With Yoro out of the equation, Erik ten Hag will presumably fall back upon a returning Lisandro Martinez who didn’t play majority of the second half in the last season due to an injury.
Manchester United is still in hot pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich in order to add further reinforcements to their defence that was in shambles in the preceding season. With Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof being the primary ones to fill in the expected boots of Yoro, the arrival of the de Ligt and Mazraoui duo can be a massive catalyst for the fans. Talking about the fans, they weren’t happy about what Joshua Zirkzee had to say and took to X to vent out their apprehension.
How effective Zirkzee is going to be in the supposed ‘9.5’ role still remains a question mark. With United’s prized signing of Antony and Jadon Sancho backfiring in recent years, the fans are hopeful that the Dutch attacker doesn’t become the latest addition to the list of flops at Old Trafford.
