The season is not going too well for George Pickens as he stumbled against the Dallas Cowboys’ secondary, while his team sustained their second consecutive loss. The 2024 season is five weeks old, yet the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver hasn’t recorded a single touchdown and barely managed 310 yards.

After logging three catches for a bizarre 26 yards, Pickens’ frustration on the sidelines was somewhat reasonable but not his unsportsmanlike conduct towards Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis. He knocked the CB on the ground by grabbing his helmet after being trash-talked by him following Dallas’ 20-17 victory.

While Pickens received backlash for his act, Lewis didn’t let it go so easily and made sure to give him an earful before the night ended. The cornerback was approached by media on his way to the locker room and he took a vicious dig at the Steelers’ wide receiver by calling him “weak.”

Pittsburgh needs a receiver. George Pickens is weak.

Except for Week 4, which ended in their season’s one loss, the Steelers wideout’s performance has been quite underwhelming this season. He hasn’t reached the 100-yard mark in four of the last five games and on Sunday, he was given quite a limited target, which head coach Mike Tomlin later said was part of the “rep management” to bring out more productively from Pickens.

George Pickens’ bold message backfires as Steelers fall to Cowboys

After posting 113 yards last week, Pickens entered the field with confidence, even though he was wearing a black eye. He wrote a stern message on his eye tape, directed at his opponents, “Open [expletive] always.”

However, it backfired as the Steelers suffered another loss by 20-15. The former Alabama product recorded his lowest stat of playing just 34 snaps out of 58, according to NFLGSIS. After posting 1,000+ yards last season, Pickens had high expectations from this season, but so far, he hasn’t lived up to that.

It’s no different than we minimized some of the snaps of d-linemen like Cam Heyward and so forth, man. It is just about snap management. It’s no underlying story, to be quite honest with you.

Mike Tomlin said in the post-game press conference

In three-quarters of the game, the wideout ran only 12 routes and played 21 snaps as he was targeted less than usual. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s other receivers Van Jefferson played 47 yards, and Calvin Austin played 44.
