German tennis ace Alexander Zverev has continued his fine run on clay as he reached the quarterfinals at 2024 Roland Garros. The 27-year-old beat Holger Rune in the fourth round to advance to the last eight. Zverev now has a chance to replicate his title-winning performance at the Rome Masters and lift his maiden Grand Slam title.
While many are waiting for Zverev to go the distance, a large section of tennis fans is not happy with the German competing on the tour despite the domestic violence allegations against him. As the trial for the domestic violence case against Zverev is underway in Berlin, many demand that he should not be allowed to compete at the Grand Slam tournament.
Top journalist Ben Rothenberg is leading the charge against Zverev as he demands the German be barred from participating in the 2024 Roland Garros. He shared a post on X condemning the freedom Zverev is enjoying and stated that nothing is enjoyable about the 27-year-old playing.
Update: This is all still deeply grim. Nothing remotely redeeming or enjoyable about it. Zverev should not be playing.Ben Rothenberg posted on X.
Tracking the progress of Alexander Zverev’s domestic violence case trial
While Alexander Zverev fights his opponents on the tennis court in Paris, his lawyers are fighting for him in the Berlin court against the fine imposed on him for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, an accusation which he denies. Zverev has refused to pay a fine of $489,000 which was imposed by a Berlin court for allegedly trying to strangle Brenda Patea, his then partner and the mother of his three-year-old daughter, Mayla.
The German tennis ace has denied all those accusations. Zverev’s lead defense lawyer, Alfred Dierlamm, told the court the accusations were “unfounded and contradictory”. He said the court would hear evidence from eyewitnesses and would see chat messages, which would give “an objective view of the events”.
Also, Zverev’s legal team lodged a request for the rest of the trial to be held behind closed doors, in order to protect his privacy and the wellbeing of Mayla and it is reported that the judges have obliged to the request. It is to be seen what the verdict is going to be and how it will affect the World No. 5 tennis player.
