In August 2020, Donald Trump, during his first term as the President of the United States of America, passed an executive order to ban TikTok which came into effect on January 18th, 2025, two days before the oath ceremony of his second term in the Oval Office. However, Trump rescinded the order right after he was sworn in as the 47th head of state.
Residents of the US who frequently use the social media app, primarily to upload short reels, were greeted with the message, “As a result of President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!”
The host of FS1’s Speak, Joy Taylor, called out Donald Trump for passing the order to ban TikTok and then putting a stay on it right after coming back into power. Taylor left a message on her Instagram account suggesting that Trump misused his authority.

This was not an isolated attack from Taylor. A few days before the oath ceremony took place, Taylor left an eye-popping message on the internet implying that Donald Trump’s return as the president was a dark day for the country.
Why does Donald Trump want to ban TikTok from America?
The Trump government began a crackdown on various applications and products on the internet, affiliated with foreign entities. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has its roots in China. Trump highlighted that TikTok collects ‘vast swaths’ of personal information from its subscribers and users which directly gets transported to the Chinese government.
ByteDance was advised that if it wanted to continue functioning, then it must cut ties with its parent entity in China, sell its assets to a local buyer, and establish a base of operations in the US. January 19, 2025, was set as the deadline but ByteDance challenged the order in court.
After Trump handed the power over to Joe Biden, his administration, in conjunction with the Supreme Court of the USA (SCOTUS) put a stay on the order and TikTok continued to operate without much restriction.
Trump appeared to have a change of heart and opted to keep TikTok as it is for the time being at the start of his second tenure. According to reports, the government will still try and complete the sale of the app. Several billionaires are interested in buying the company, but their names remain confidential.
