Juan Carlos Ferrero has parted ways with Carlos Alcaraz. And on the same day Alcaraz announced the same on social media, Ferrero also shared a social media post, where, among other things, he wrote he wished he could have continued.

And this sparked a huge speculation that Ferrero did not want to leave Alcaraz’s entourage, that he was removed from the team. Later, rumors started spreading that there were disagreements over the new contract, including the financial aspect of it.

Ferrero, during his interview with Marca, agreed that failed contract negotiation was the reason behind the split. But he also dismissed the claims that the salary reduction resulted in the separation.

When asked whether he would accept if he receives another coaching offer from the 22-year-old, Fererro did not rule out the possibility of re-joining his now ex-protege’s team.

Of course, I’m not closing the door. With the relationship we’ve had, closing the door definitively wouldn’t be logical, neither for him nor for the team. I want to end things well with them. Disagreeing on certain points doesn’t mean we’re not still friends or that we don’t maintain a very good relationship.

The 45-year-old was also asked what he would do if he receives a coaching offer from Alcaraz’s arch-rival Jannik Sinner. Ferrero said parting ways with the 22-year-old “hurt” him, and he would not be back on tour as coach, at least in the near future.

I wish Carlos all the best, and I believe he has the potential to be the best tennis player in history. It’s something I’ve said many times. And, even without me, he has people around him who can prepare him very well.

Ferrero guided the six-time Grand Slam champion to 24 Majors, including his Majors. Alcaraz also became the World No.1 player under the tutelage of the 2003 French Open champion.

Juan Carlos Ferrero on what he wished he could have implemented while working with Carlos Alcaraz

During that same interview with Marca, Juan Carlos Ferrero was asked about his unfulfilled goal with Carlos Alcaraz. Ferrero wished he could have led the youngster to the Australian Open title.

Australia is the tournament we’ve been chasing for the last two years, and it just wasn’t to be. Beyond that, what we both need to be at peace with is that we gave absolutely everything we had. Even though we didn’t win Australia, we achieved important things, and the main objective was his development and to become a truly great tennis player within his potential. Carlos, as of today, has a lot of room for improvement because he’s about to turn 23.

Alcaraz has never reached the semifinals of the Australian Open. He made the quarterfinals twice, in 2024 and 2025, losing both times in four sets to Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, respectively.

Before the Australian Open, Alcaraz will play Jannik Sinner in an exhibition event in Incheon, South Korea, scheduled to start on January 10. The first Major of the season is set to start on January 18.

This year, Alcaraz lifted two Majors, the French Open and the US Open, by defeating Sinner. The total trophies that he won this year were eight from 11 finals. Apart from the two Majors, Alcaraz also won three Masters 1000: at the Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and the Cincinnati Masters, by defeating Lorenzo Musetti and Sinner, respectively. The last title that he lifted this season was his career’s first Japan Open title by beating 2024 US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz.
