In Short
  • Juan Carlos Ferrero will discuss his split from Carlos Alcaraz in an upcoming interview.
  • The split, announced in December 2025, has led to conflicting narratives from both parties.
  • Ferrero unfollowed Alcaraz and his team on social media, citing a need for distance after their separation.

There’s a reason people say actions speak louder than words. Carlos Alcaraz spent weeks insisting his split from longtime coach Juan Carlos Ferrero was mutual, respectful, and built on gratitude. However, things eventually broke down between this duo in December 2025.

When the split was announced publicly in December 2025, Ferrero didn’t hide his feelings. Speaking to Spanish outlet COPE, he was raw and honest in a way that caught people off guard. Carlos Ferrero said on COPE:

My heart broke when it happened. I’m recovering little by little. Time heals everything. I wish I could have continued.

Alcaraz’s version of events painted a different picture. He called it “the end of a chapter,” expressed deep gratitude, and insisted the decision was mutual.

There have been many conflicting reports about the reasoning since then. Multiple Spanish media outlets have reported disagreements between Alcaraz’s family members and Ferrero.

The story didn’t die down after the split, as there were many headlines coming after that. Juan Carlos Ferrero publicly stopped following Carlos Alcaraz on Instagram. Now, he has also revealed the reason behind this decision.

I don’t follow him because I need a little bit of time to create some distance. But at the same time, if I open Instagram, he shows up everywhere. In the end, I didn’t achieve anything. If you follow tennis accounts and tournaments he appears there anyway…I didn’t do it out of spite. I want to see him and give him a hug . To normalize everything that’s happened, I think we still need to have a conversation. I’d like that.

It happened quietly, the way most bombshells do. Shortly after Alcaraz lifted the Australian Open trophy in January 2026, fans began noticing something off on social media. Ferrero, the man who had spent seven years shaping Alcaraz into the most dominant player on the planet, had unfollowed his former pupil on Instagram.

But it didn’t stop there. Ferrero also unfollowed Alcaraz’s fitness trainer and physiotherapist, essentially cutting ties with the entire inner circle he once helped build. The only person he still follows is Samuel López, the man who replaced him.

A partnership that defined a generation

To understand why this hurts, one will have to understand what Juan Carlos Ferrero and Alcaraz built together. It started in 2018 when a 15-year-old Alcaraz walked into Ferrero’s academy in Villena, Spain. Ferrero, a former world No. 1 and 2003 French Open champion, saw something in the kid immediately.

Over the next seven years, that belief transformed into one of the most decorated coach-player partnerships in modern tennis history — six Grand Slam titles, 24 ATP singles trophies, and a rise to world No. 1 that made Alcaraz the face of the sport’s next generation.

Ferrero wasn’t just a coach. He was a mentor, a surrogate father figure on tour, and the architect behind Alcaraz’s tactical brilliance. You don’t replace that with a press release.

Samuel López, previously a member of Ferrero’s own academy staff, has stepped in as Alcaraz’s new head coach. Alcaraz’s brother Álvaro is also expected to join the team at select events, giving the setup a more family-oriented feel.
