Juan Martin del Potro‘s remarkable tennis career was marred by injuries, and eventually, he was forced to hang up his racket. He did so at an exhibition event, ‘The Last Challenge’, last year after defeating his longtime rival, Novak Djokovic.
The Argentine played his career’s last official match at the 2022 Argentina Open after a defeat to compatriot Federico Delbonis in the opening round. During his prime, he suffered a wrist injury following his victory at the 2009 US Open.
Then, he suffered a career-threatening knee injury at the 2018 Shanghai Masters, before reinjuring it at the Queen’s Club Championships next year. Since then, surgeries, injections, and multiple medications have become a part of his life. And the wrist pain, he wants to end so badly that he has started to ask ChatGPT for help.
I can say I had a bit of bad luck, but the truth is, I became the athlete I was because of the injuries. It’s part of the story in those more dramatic chapters. Now I’m asking artificial intelligence for help. I’ve talked so much with ChatGPT. I have MRIs and X-rays of every kind. I go to clinics, and they say, ‘You again, we don’t know what else to do for you.’
Juan Martin del Potro said during an interview with ESPN
Del Potro retired with 22 singles titles. He reached the career-best ranking of No.3 in August 2018.
Juan Martin del Potro recalls winning his career’s first Grand Slam title by defeating Roger Federer
Juan Martin del Potro still gets excited about the benefits that come after winning Grand Slam titles. He lifted his career’s first and only Major at the 2009 US Open by defeating none other than 22-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.

You win a Grand Slam, and things change a lot. Even in contracts, sometimes you have to go and participate. The clothing company calls you, the racket company, and the ATP. It still excites me. Sometimes I watch that last game and say, ‘Let it end the same way.’
Juan Martin del Potro told ESPN
That match, del Potro won with a 3–6, 7–6(7–5), 4–6, 7–6(7–4), 6–2 scoreline. The Swiss maestro met del Potro 25 times, winning on 18 occasions. In their last encounter, del Potro clinched the win in the final of the 2018 Indian Wells.
That game was dramatic because I was up 5-2, and if I didn’t break then, I would have had to serve. Having to close out the match, the final, against Federer, my first Grand Slam, with my serve, would have been pressure; I don’t know if it would have been manageable. So I had put all my energy into it; it was that moment or nothing. And well, it finally happened.
Juan Martin del Potro added
Federer called time on his career at the 2022 Laver Cup, becoming the first member of the legendary Big 3 to retire. He now spends a lot of his time on the golf course and could also plan a Fedal Tour, an exhibition event where he will play alongside Rafael Nadal.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion hung up his racket at the 2024 Davis Cup after Spain’s 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. Novak Djokovic is the lone member of the Big 3 yet to retire, and he wants to continue his search for his 25th historic next year as well. The 24-time Grand Slam champion lifted two ATP 250 titles this year, defeating Hubert Hurkacz at the Geneva Open and Lorenzo Musetti at the Hellenic Championship.
