The contenders of the Juan Soto sweepstakes have started meeting the player. This week, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox meet with Soto and his agent Scott Boras. Reports now suggest that both teams have impressed them with initial discussions.
As per New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the owners of both teams made “impressive in-person presentations” to Soto. Though he is expected to meet a few more teams, it is considered a good start for these two teams.
The New York Yankees are expected to be next in line and meet him on Monday. Soto had an incredible 2024 season with them and won the Silver Slugger Award with 41 home runs and 109 RBI while helping the team win their first pennant since 2009.
This performance has made him the hottest free agent in the MLB offseason this year. Soto is speculated to pen down a massive deal between $500 and $700 million. Apart from the Blue Jays, Red Sox, and the Yankees, the New York Mets are expected to go heavy for him. Team owner Steve Cohen is expected to meet him and Boras in California.

Recently, Red Sox legend David Ortiz spoke on Juan Soto‘s free agency. While speaking with Rob Bradford on the “Audacy Sports” podcast, the MLB Hall of Famer claimed he could be his successor at the Red Sox.

"I’m telling you. We would have Manny and Papi for the left side … If there was one player in baseball who could be the next David Ortiz in Boston, it is Juan Soto. He’s that good.

The Red Sox have a good history with Dominican players in the past. With the likes of Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez, and Ortiz enjoying a successful period with the team, the Dominican connection of the franchise could drive Soto to Boston.
Social media users unmoved by reports of Juan Soto being impressed with Blue Jays and Red Sox
Though the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox have made good first impressions on Juan Soto, fans are not moved by these reports. On social media, many fans have refused to buy this and claimed they Soto will just use the two teams to land a bigger deal with other teams.
Some fans took a shot at the Blue Jays management duo of Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins. Meanwhile, some users claimed this was a plan by Scott Boras just to drive up the price of his client.
One fan wrote, “Going to use the Jays like Ohtani did!” while likely recalling the reports of Blue Jays and Shohei Ohtani from last year. In the 2023 offseason, reports emerged that the Blue Jays had impressed the Japanese two-way star and were heavy favorites to sign me. That did not happen, and Ohtani instead penned down a 10-year $700 million deal with the Dodgers.

Unless Toronto proves to him that they will be signing more top quality players, he will never sign for Jays. He has zero interest ofbeing on a rebuild or non contender.

Toronto made a good impression on Othani also. He just chose to go win with a better team… Soto will do the same unfortunately..

— Moka (@FrappMocha) November 16, 2024
He is using these meetings as leverage to get max dollar from the other suitors. No way he comes to Toronto. No way.

As always, only time will tell when Soto signs a new contract and where does he go. For now, it is likely that this free agency saga will continue for a while.
