Juan Soto is not having a great time in the batter’s box at the moment. The 4-time MLB All-Star has suffered a slump in form. On Wednesday night, he once again became the subject of trolling from fans on social media after he had an unusual approach against Garrett Crochet and did not swing his bat.
The Dominican international recently made his first return to the Yankee Stadium following his $765 million deal with the New York Mets in December 2024. His return did not go as he would have hoped for at the start as he went 1-for-10 in the three games.
His fortunes did not change in the series against the Boston Red Sox either. In the first game, he was criticized for his hustle. While Soto defended himself from these critics, he was unable to contribute much with the bat in the second game as well.
On Wednesday night, Soto was named as the No.3 hitter. This was the first time he was batting in this spot since 2023. During his matchup against Red Sox’s starter Garrett Crochet, he took an unusual approach.
The Dominican international did not swing his bat at any of the three pitches Crochet threw. The surprising part in this is that the 2nd and 3rd pitches were both in the middle of the strike zone. Soto did not even try to swing his bat in this at-bat and struck out looking.

The 26-year-old struck out two more times in the game. He did have a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning which extended his team’s lead to 4-1.
Soto ended up drawing a walk in the ninth inning and finished the game 0-for-3. Fortunately, his team were able to score some runs in this game and avoided the series sweep by winning 5-1.
Fans troll Juan Soto following his performance against Red Sox in 5-1 win
While the New York Mets got an important 5-1 win on Wednesday, Juan Soto‘s performance in this game once again stole all the headlines. The slugger, not swinging his bat in this first appearance against Garrett Crotchet, ignited some wild reactions across social media.

Fans on X dissed Soto for his approach in the first inning against Crotchet. Several of them took a swipe at him. One user wrote, “Bro does not want to be a Met” while taking a jab at him after some concerning reports of him emerged recently.

In his last 7 games, Soto has been 4-for-22 with batting with an average of .182. During this run, he has just 1 RBI, struck out 7 times and drew in 8 walks.
MLB Hall of Famer comes into support of Juan Soto amidst slump in form
Juan Soto’s slump in form has become a think to worry for the New York Mets and their fanbase. The $765 million man has managed just 4 hits in his last 7 games. In the midst of his slump, an MLB Hall of Famer came into his support.

After Soto received severe backlash for his performances in recent games, former Boston Red Sox pitcher and Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez, came to his defense. The 3-time Cy Young Award winner shared a powerful message towards Soto and recalled how it took a while for him to adjust while being the highest paid player in the league.
Juan Soto: I was once the highest paid player and it took me a while to adjust. Nobody thinks about the human inside the uniform. There are things that can get you distracted. We forget how young he is. #mlbontbs

Martinez signed a 6-year, $75 million deal in 1997 with the Red Sox after being traded by the Montreal Expos. At that time, this contract made him the highest-paid player in the league with an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $12.5 million.
Soto currently has an AAV of $51 million due to the $765 million contract he signed. This could increase to $55 million if he does not opt-out of his deal after 2029 season.
