The Juan Soto saga has finally come to an end. On Sunday night reports emerged that the four-time All-Star has penned down a massive 15-year $765 million deal, making it the biggest contract in professional sports.
The 26-year-old attracted a lot of names in the free agency. At first, the number rumored to land him was around $600 million. However, in the past few days, this number rose up and crossed the $700 million mark.
As per reports on Saturday, the bidding war for Soto came down between the two New York teams. Soto, who spent the 2024 season with the New York Yankees, will now join their cross-town rivals, the Mets, on an enormous deal.

This deal of Soto now surpasses the one Shohei Ohtani signed almost a year ago. The Japanese two-way star agreed on a 10-year $700 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers, making him the highest-paid player in the league.
With this deal now, Soto will become the new highest-paid player. As per MLB.com‘s Mark Feinsand, the Dominican international will have a $51 million AAV, with no deferrals. The deal, though, has an opt-out clause after the 2029 season.
The Yankees, on the other hand, offered Soto a 16-year $760 million deal with an AAV of $47.5 million. In the end, though, it was the Mets who got the nod from Soto. He now becomes the latest player to represent both the Yankees and the Mets in MLB.
The Yankees’ final offer to Soto was 16 years and $760 million, per source. That’s a $47.5 million AAV; the Mets offer was for a $51 million AAV.

Juan Soto wasn’t lying when he said he loved New York. Just not the team that now has a 1-man army offense.

So what happens from here on? The Mets have finally landed the one big superstar they have been looking for. What about the Yankees, though?
As of now, it is hard to tell what will happen. One thing for sure is that the next Subway Series could be an interesting one as Soto, who had become a fan favorite in the Bronx, could meet with a few jeers from the Yankee faithful.
