Real Madrid starlet Jude Bellingham has surprisingly admitted that he was not close to joining Liverpool during the 2023 summer transfer window. This is contrary to rumors linking the 21-year-old with a move to Anfield from Borussia Dortmund.

Jude Bellingham made a sensational move to Los Blancos last summer for a reported transfer fee of €113 million. It turned out to be a phenomenal deal for the club, as the midfielder went on to score 23 goals and provide 12 assists in 40 matches.

The Englishman also won the La Liga Player of the Season award. He ended his debut season with the La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles and also finished third in the race to the Ballon d’Or. However, before his move to Real Madrid, the midfielder was heavily linked to Liverpool

Speaking ahead of a crucial UCL encounter between the two sides, Bellingham stated that his sights were always set on joining the Spanish giants. He claimed that he was not that close to making a move to the Premier League side.

The 21-year-old, however, did state that talks between his former club Dortmund and several other teams, including Liverpool, took place. He added that when Real Madrid came calling, he did not think twice about his move.

My move to Liverpool was not as close as the media made out. I don’t want to say anything disrespectful, but when Real Madrid arrive… it’s different level.

Bellingham was also asked whether he would like to join forces with England teammate and Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid. In reply, he said that it would not be suitable to speak about a player’s future while he was under contract at another club.

Liverpool reportedly missed a chance to sign Real Madrid starlet back in 2017

Recent reports indicate Liverpool were remarkably close to signing Real Madrid forward Rodrygo in 2017 for just €3 million. However, the move reportedly fell through and the Brazilian later moved to Spain in 2019.

The young Brazilian starlet, who was then playing for Santos, was identified by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as a promising talent. He had reportedly watched videos of Rodrygo playing and immediately took an interest in him.

The Reds did move forward to negotiate with Santos. However, the move did not move forward because the two clubs could not agree on a transfer fee.

Rodrydo stayed back at the club and joined Real Madrid two years later for a staggering €45 million. He has since then made 231 appearances for the club and scored 57 goals.
