Jey Uso took on Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash in France. The 38-year-old looked to capture his first singles title on the main roster since his tag-team breakup. Similar to his previous attempts, the Samoan failed to capture gold after outside interference. However, the champion was not happy with the way he won the match.

Damian Priest repeatedly told his stablemates that he did not want them interfering in his matches. Previously, in a segment on Raw, he said that he did not need them. His teammates did not listen to him, and the champion lost his temper. After the match, Finn Balor and JD McDonagh came out to beat down the challenger. However, the Puerto Rican pushed the former Universal Champion away and even grabbed him by the neck.

The dispute was eventually sorted out, and the three celebrated in the ring, albeit looking a little irritated with each other. The World Heavyweight Champion made his entry into the ring alone. However, it wasn’t long before other members of The Judgment Day would follow. McDonagh eventually came out to cause a distraction in the match. However, the Archer of Infamy seemed upset by his presence and instructed his stablemate to go backstage.

Later in the match, Finn Balor also came out to help his teammate. After he was hit with a spear and a Uso splash, Priest’s foot was placed on the rope by McDonagh, resulting in a rope break and saving the match for The Judgment Day member.

Eventually, Jey Uso was successful in taking out the interfering Judgment Day members. He hit McDonagh with a suicide dive and the former World Champion with a spear on the outside. Unfortunately, the numbers given were too much for him. The 41-year-old retained his championship after a South of Heaven Chokeslam.

Is Damian Priest turning babyface following a Judgment Day break-up?

With tensions in The Judgment Day at an all-time high, the group breaking up seems inevitable. While Rhea Ripley used to handle disputes between the members of the group in the past, she is unfortunately on a hiatus due to injury. After their breakup, it would be interesting to see what kind of singles run is planned for the current champion.

WWE has tried to turn Priest babyface numerous times in the past. The company initially wanted to portray him as a good guy during his singles run. However, it simply did not work, leading to the former North American Champion turning heel and eventually joining The Judgment Day.

The 41-year-old also displayed shades of being a good guy in June 2023. Similar to his Backlash match, he did not want any interference during his World Heavyweight Championship match against Seth Rollins. Needless to say, the World Heavyweight Champion will embark on his second run soon.
