Murray has performed incredibly well at the Olympic Games throughout his career. In the 2012 London Olympics, the former World No.1 defeated Roger Federer to win his first singles gold medal. Alongside the singles gold, he won a silver medal in mixed doubles with Laura Robson.
In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Murray defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in the final to defend his singles gold medal. By doing this, he became the first player ever to win back-to-back gold medals in singles.
Andy Murray’s retirement: As it happened
As Andy Murray prepares to put the curtain down on his incredible career, it doesn’t hide the fact that the Scottish legend has had a chaotic last month. The former World No.1 was hoping to have a good end to his career, but even he wouldn’t have expected to retire this early.
It all started after he decided to play at Queen’s Club. In the Round of 16 match against Jordan Thompson, Murray sustained a back injury while trailing 4-1 in the first set.
The Scottish legend’s Wimbledon hopes eventually stumbled as he withdrew from his first-round match in the men’s singles draw. However, he teamed up with his brother Jamie Murray to play one last doubles match. The two-time Wimbledon champion received a standing ovation from the centre court, which included tennis legends like Novak Djokovic and John McEnroe.
He was also projected to unite with Emma Raducanu in mixed doubles, but the former US Open champion withdrew from this highly-anticipated match due to wrist problems. Hence, Raducanu wanted to stay fully focused on her singles draw.
