Andy Murray‘s mother, Judy Murray, revealed that she had also lost hope when he and his doubles partner, Dan Evans, were down five match points in their first-round match at the Paris Olympics on July 28. This was Murray’s first men’s doubles match in his final tournament, and he desperately wanted to stay in the competition.

In his last professional tournament, fans wanted to see more of the Brit. Unfortunately, the Scot had to withdraw from singles due to fitness issues, leaving him to compete only in doubles. After losing the first set easily and barely winning the second, hope seemed lost for Murray.

Partnered with Dan Evans, the duo fought with all their might in the first-round match at the Games against the Japanese duo of Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori. They were 4/9 in the ten-point tie-break and saved five successive match points to stay in the game before they gave a final push and finished the match 2-6, 7-6(5), 11/9.

After the match, she was interviewed about the day’s unbelievable events, and Murray revealed that she had been contemplating which flight to take home, unable to believe the comeback was possible.

I was mentally working out which flight I would get home tonight. But you can never write him off.

The win shocked even the players themselves. Both of them wanted to do it for their country, which not only put them in the race for a possible medal but also gave Murray another day to fight for in his career.

Despite a shabby performance for the most part of the match, they pulled off a memorable victory on one of the grandest stages of a sporting event. After the win, Murray revealed to the press just how important the win was, which extended their stay a little longer.

I’ve loved being part of the Olympics, it’s an amazing event. It’s meant a lot to me over the years and to get to finish playing here one last time in the Olympics is extra special. Just glad we live to fight another day because it would’ve been obviously disappointing to lose today. But we keep going, let’s see where we get to.
Andy Murray said in the post-match interview

Their second-round opponent is yet to be decided, but they are not the only British duo competing this year. The duo of Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury are yet to start their campaign at the Games and would hope to win their first-round match.
