In the absence of Rashee Rice, Isaiah Pacheco, and Marquise Brown, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled a new trick up their sleeves – JuJu Smith-Schuster. The wide receiver made an instant impact against the New Orleans Saints as the Chiefs remain unbeaten through the fifth week of the 2024 NFL season.
The Chiefs defeated the Saints on MNF at the Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri. The Chiefs are 5-0 to the season while the Saints lost their third consecutive game. Pursuing a historic three-peat, the Chiefs are in blistering red-hot form, unaffected by injuries and other factors.
In the first four games, Smith-Schuster didn’t have much of a noise. The storyline changed for the player in Week 5 when he found himself running for 130 yards with 7 receptions. Smith-Schuster, who left the Chiefs two years ago, was brought in during the offseason from the New England Patriots by the management.
The decision has worked very well in their favor, considering the decreased receiving depth after injuries to key players. The decision is now being praised by quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Speaking to Lisa Salters, the 29-year-old acknowledged that he is happy that Smith-Schuster is part of his team.
Mahomes also likened the player to Travis Kelce, while admitting Kelce is one of a kind. The quarterback pointed out that Smith-Schuster understands the ball well, and it enables him to get into open spots very easily.
JuJu Smith-Schuster wants to grab opportunity by its horns
JuJu Smith-Schuster stepped up and took advantage of the opportunity, contributing significantly to the 26-13 win. Following the game, Smith-Schuster shared that head coach Andy Reid hadn’t assured him a specific role after the Chiefs reached out post-release from the Patriots. Nevertheless, he admitted that he was content with that.
In his speech to the media, Smith-Schuster also added that he wants to step up when he can as well. He addressed that the decision to return to Missouri was a no-brainer for him as he had a nice tenure before.
On Monday, Mahomes spread the ball around, connecting with eight different receivers, while the Chiefs also rushed for 139 yards.
As the Chiefs play around with their offensive strategy, Smith-Schuster might not find themselves with the greatest numbers every time. With all said and done, non-availability of Rice making it hard for Reid, might not be as difficult as they would have thought.
