The 2024 regular season is less than a month away, yet Brandon Aiyuk’s contract situation remains the same as it was prior to the offseason. Amid the contract standoff, Julian Edelman offered advice to the star wide receiver on how to settle the negotiations.
The San Francisco 49ers wideout’s contract situation has been a big topic of discussion throughout the offseason with multiple layers of insufficient offers, trade requests, and many more complexities. While calling the Niners’ preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, the three-time Super Bowl champion went into the discussion on what would be the wise move for Aiyuk to make in terms of his contract standoff.
If I was Brandon Aiyuk, I'd be a San Francisco [49er] Week 1. Usually, a team goes out and wins a Super Bowl, and everyone tries to get paid. They haven't won a Super Bowl, but everyone is trying to get paid. There’s a jackpot at the end of the rainbow.Julian Edelman told Charissa Thompson at Levi’s Stadium
Edelman highlighted that even though the Niners had a remarkable run for the Super Bowl last season, they didn’t actually succeed with the title. And if the All-Pro receiver stays in San Francisco, contributing to the Super Bowl victory in the coming season, he will have a much stronger position in the negotiation and may land a huge payday.
49ers’ Kyle Shanahan downplays Brandon Aiyuk’s holdout
The wide receiver has been holding out throughout the offseason, followed by training camp, and both of the 49ers’ preseason games. However, when 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about Aiyuk’s hold-out, he avoided using that label.
I'm just saying when you guys call it a hold-in, and I'm not disagreeing with you guys on that, but people say that they're hurt. I think B.A. has a sore back right now and it is what it is.Kyle Shanahan said
Despite Aiyuk’s differences with the Niners, his relationship with Shanahan hasn’t changed a bit. When the receiver appeared at the 49ers’ practice drill, he greeted his head coach with a warm hug, which later led to speculations that Aiyuk’s contract had been settled. However, Shanahan dismissed them by clarifying that it’s just the way they usually greet each other.
