Puka Nacua’s candid remarks have sparked controversy and placed him in a challenging situation. From enacting a banned gesture on a live stream to openly tweeting against an NFL referee, Nacua is causing issues for the Los Angeles Rams.

Other than that, the third-year wideout has been in phenomenal form. Nacua ranks second in the league with 1592 receiving yards from 114 catches and 8 touchdowns.

The 2023 fifth-round draft pick is arguably among the best receivers in the league. So when asked to reveal his favorite receivers ever to play in the NFL, Nacua picked former Atlanta Falcons wideout Julio Jones. Nacua said on Join the Lobby hosted by Faze Swagg & Matcrackz in June 2025:

He’s [Julio Jones] my favorite. The perfect mixture of size and speed. He could run every route at his size. I think he kind of rotated between playing X and Z, but something about him… That should be the prototype for every wide receiver.

Nacua even claimed that if the Falcons had held on to defeat the New England Patriots in 2017, then Jones would have been declared the Super Bowl MVP. Nacua quipped:

He was ballin’ in that game.

Jones wasn’t exactly “ballin” with four catches. But he went 87 yards on those four catches. His best moment was the toe-drag catch for 27 yards. Of course, Tom Brady’s Patriots pulled off a miracle escape in the final moments of the game to secure the Lombardi Trophy.

Jones played thirteen seasons in the league. From 2012 to 2019, the Alabama graduate was arguably the best in his position, won two All-Pro nods, and led the NFL in receiving yards twice. During that stretch, he averaged nearly 1400 yards and four touchdowns.

The Rams’ Week 16 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks was overshadowed by some controversial calls. For context, the officials overturned a missed two-point attempt and gave DPI (defensive pass interference) on the Rams players, which they disagreed with.

After the game, Nacua targeted the officials on Twitter. He eventually deleted the tweet, but the damage had been done. Reporters annoyed Rams head coach Sean McVay by asking about Nacua’s actions. McVay looked on the brink of losing his cool, but managed to deflect the onslaught of questions.

Earlier this week, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford addressed the incident while appearing on the Let’s Go! podcast. Stafford claimed that the complaints are unlikely to help him get more calls in the future.

Well, we need all the help we can get from the stripes, you know? So, it’s not fun when he’s running routes, guys are tugging on his jersey, and stuff, I don’t know if he’s gonna get too many calls.

Stafford is in his 17th season in the league. The Super Bowl winner knows a thing or two about debatable refereeing decisions. Unfortunately, the NFL doesn’t allow players to comment on the referee. Fortunately, for Nacua, he escaped with a $25,000 fine, unlike the Steelers WR DK Metcalf.

Before playing the Falcons in week 17, the Rams found out that four players had been selected for the 2025 Pro Bowl. Stafford and Nacua lead the charge alongside linebackers Byron Young and Jared Verse. Young has accumulated 42 combined tackles, 10 tackles for losses, 11.0 sacks, and 1 force fumble. Verse isn’t far behind with 49 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles.
