Things have just gone from bad to worse for the Atlanta Braves. On Monday, the MLB handed an 80-game suspension to Jurickson Profar after he got a positive Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) test.

This major development regarding him comes just after four games in the new season. After a career best year in 2024 with the San Diego Padres, Profar become a free agent and penned down a three-year $42 million deal with the Braves.

As per multiple reports, the 32-year-old was tested positive for the Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) substance. This is the same substance that led to the ban of former Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox star Manny Ramirez in 2009.

With him violating the MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, Profar will now be banned for 80 games of the season. This would mean that he would return to action by the end of the month of June. If the Braves do qualify for the postseason, Profar will be ineligible to participate in it as a result of this ban.

The Braves have not enjoyed a good time so far this season. They got swept 4-0 in the opening series against Profar’s former team, the San Diego Padres. Profar, who hit 24 home runs last year, went 3-for-15 in this 4 game series and drew just one walk.

Tatis Jr. was also handed a similar 80-game ban in August 2022 for using banned substance Clostebol. The 2-time All-Star was already on the sidelines due to a fractured bone. Following the 80-game ban he missed the entire 2022 campaign.

As punishment of this, he also missed the first 20 games of the 2023 season. Unlike him, Profar will be eligible to return this season.

In the statement, the team mentioned that they were “shocked” to hear about this development. However, they backed the decision of the league and hoped that the player would take it as a learning experience.

We were surprised and extremely disappointed to learn that Jurickson Profar tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program. We fully support the Program and are hopeful that Jurickson will learn from this experience.

Atlanta Braves said in their statement

Profar’s signing was seen as a massive boost to the offense of the Braves in the absence of team superstar Ronald Acuna Jr., who is still recovering from a knee injury. With Profar now out for a while, the team will need someone to fill the left field and lead off spot for the team until Acuna Jr. returns.

For now Stuart Fairchild along with Jarred Kelenic, Bryan De La Cruz and Michael Harris II will serve as the outfielders of the team. The Braves could then turn their attention to Alex Verdugo, who was signed as a free agent late in the Spring Training. He though, is still a few weeks away from being 100 percent ready.
