The Big3 2025 season opener took place on Saturday. Former NBA players like Dwight Howard and Lance Stephenson were part of the opener. Just when it looked like things were going smoothly, they took a drastic turn in the season opener. Howard wasted no time getting involved in his Big 3 debut. Surprisingly, it was with Stephenson, another Los Angeles Lakers graduate.
On Saturday, June 14, both players made their eagerly awaited 3-on-3 league debuts, but their debuts were overshadowed by a brawl that spilled onto the media area beyond the hoop. It started when Howard pushed Stephenson’s raised fist away after Stephenson seemed to elbow him in the chest.
Howard then placed Stephenson in a one-arm headlock before the two players tackled one another to the ground. This left the NBA community stunned, with many reacting to his news on social media. The altercation occurred shortly after Stephenson and Jordan Crawford, fellow former NBA players, got into a fight; however, Crawford was the one who initiated the altercation.

Although it’s unclear if Howard objected to the earlier altercation with his Big 3 teammate, Stephenson’s refusal to be held back was evident. Although officials intervened promptly, Howard and Stephenson were both removed from the game. Los Angeles was defeated by Stephenson’s Miami team, 50-44. It’s also important to note that Stephenson has recently been coming off a rough patch over the past week.
Most recently, he went on a 1v1 shooting contest with former NBA player Michael Beasley for a whopping sum of $100,000. This took place on N3on’s live stream. Unfortunately for Stephenson, he lost the contest as well as the money. Now, just a week later, the former Lakers alumn finds himself in a wild altercation with the 2020 NBA winner.
Fans react wildly after coming across Dwight Howard and Lance Stephenson’s altercation
Nobody would have expected the Big3 season opener to fight on the very first day. However, Howard and Stephenson had other plans. Although they had to intention to do so, it happened in the heat of the moment. Fans swiftly reacted on social media, with many criticizing Howard and Stephenson jointly as well as separately.
The NBA world did not hold back its feelings. Many fans took to their X and Instagram accounts to put forward their views on this wild altercation between the two former NBA players. It remains to be seen whether or not both stars comment on this matter in a few days. Moreover, Howard, who played 16 seasons in the NBA, was renowned for his supremacy with the Orlando Magic. Also, he is an eight-time NBA All-Star and the 2020 NBA champion. On the other hand, during his NBA career, Stephenson played for several teams, but his tenure with the Indiana Pacers is what made him most famous.
A former NBA player once made an intriguing case on Dwight Howard
The Los Angeles Lakers’ top summer goal is to acquire a center of playing caliber who can run around the court in transition, grab returns, dunk off lob passes, and close down the paint defensively. On the NightCap show, though, former NBA star Jermaine O’Neal and host Shannon Sharpe shared some of the most outrageous opinions on the subject.

The opinion O’Neal put forward was that the Lakers should re-sign Dwight Howard for the position, leaving many stunned in the process:
I don’t know why the NBA is getting away from the veterans. I’d use Dwight Howard. He always seems to be in shape… He’s one of the best defenders of all time to come down to protecting the rim and rebounding that basketball.
The 2025 Hall of Fame inductee is unlikely to do any good given his age (39) at the position, especially for a team like the Lakers in the NBA. He cannot provide any serious team with the center it needs. The squad needs to acquire a young center who can play alongside Doncic. The Lakers will have to move quickly to sort out this issue ahead of the new season.
