Justin Fields isn't running away from the task of leading the Jets team that hasn't played postseason football since 2010.

It only took Justin Fields a couple of months and a few training sessions to convince the New York Jets coaching team that they struck gold. The AFC East team signed Fields after Aaron Rodgers‘ two-year layover in the Big Apple.

Rodgers’ time with the Gang Green was memorable for more moments off it than on it. Rookie head coach Aaron Glenn cut ties with the veteran quarterback to start his regime with a fresh face.

Fields wants to repay his coach by giving his best on the gridiron.

I think I can be great. That’s been the goal for me my whole life, my whole career. I think the sky’s the limit for this team, for this offense, but we do have a long way to go.

Justin Fields said Thursday after the Jets’ fifth OTA practice (H/T: ESPN)

The 26-year-old thinks along the same lines as his head coach.

I just think [Justin Fields is] ready to break out as a top-notch quarterback… He’s going to do everything he can to be one of the better ones, and we are going to coach our asses off to make sure he does a good job out there.

As per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Justin Fields signed a two-year contract with the Jets in March. His contract includes base salaries of $5M (2025) and $20M (2026). Fields also acquired a $20M signing bonus. His salary cap hit is $5M and $23M, respectively.

Justin Fields found out which team the Jets will face in week one of 2025

The Jets finished 5-12 last year in 2024 and 7-10 two consecutive years before that. They have a 56-108 win/loss record in the decade. Moreover, they haven’t qualified for the playoffs since 2010, when they lost the conference final.

Fields can be the catalyst to start competing in their division, which includes the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots. Their first divisional match is in week two, but they start the season with a trip to Fields’ old stomping ground in Pittsburgh.

When Fields found out that the Jets face the Steelers in week one, he bluntly reacted.

Uhm… that’s who we play Week 1. Wasn’t really a thought to that.

Fields spent last year on the Steelers roster, sharing snaps with veteran Russell Wilson. However, he mostly came on as more of a reliever than a true backup.

After the season ended, the Steelers reportedly attempted to re-sign the Ohio State graduate, but he didn’t see a future in Pittsburgh. He chose the Jets because he wanted to play for Glenn.

I’ve played against him early in my career [and] I know how passionate he is about the game, the way he coaches, the way his players play. So, I think that was the biggest thing for me.

When the reporters asked Fields whether there was any extra emotion because he played on that team last year? Fields replied, “Nah.”

Fields appeared in 10 games for the Steelers, threw 106 completions from 161 attempts for 1106 yards (65.8% pass completion), 5 passing touchdowns, and one interception, along with 62 rushes for 289 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns. The Steelers qualified for the wild card, where they lost 28-14 to rivals the Baltimore Ravens.
