In 2024, Justin Fields was a worthy competitor to Russell Wilson at the Pittsburgh Steelers, leading them to victories. After his year wrapped up, he moved east to the New York Jets, where he hasn’t been any similar to the player he once was.
In seven starts of Fields, the New York Jets are winless. The 0-7 start is the third time the Jets have ended up in this quandary, joining the rosters of the 1996 and the 2020 seasons. The Jets are very unlikely to be a playoff team this year and could add one more year to the playoff drought. The sadder part of the past seven losses is that except the opener, the Jets didn’t perform like a team in any of the other ones.
In Week 6, they had a franchise-worst -10 yards net passing while Fields threw just 45 yards. The Jets lost that game against the Denver Broncos 11-13, while the one on Sunday finished in the Carolina Panthers’ favor with 6-13. The Jets have managed just 17 points over their last two games, becoming only the second team in the past decade to allow 13 points or fewer in consecutive outings and still lose both.
Justin Fields threw for just 46 yards and completed just half of the passes. They haven’t scored a single offensive touchdown in the last two games, and the red zone struggles is quite evident. Fields, who was benched mid-game on Sunday, fielded several questions regarding new head coach Aaron Glenn‘s decision to bench him as well as their inability to convert in the last yards.
Fields replied that he doesn’t have an answer for the same. Though he maintained that while it does come across as rude, it was the sole explanation he could offer.
We didn’t get in the end zone … there’s a lot. I don’t mean to be rude, but there’s no explanation to be honest with you. Simply, we haven’t played well enough.

Justin Fields may or may not be the starter for the New York Jets in Week 8
The New York Jets will return to play against the battered Cincinnati Bengals next week. The Bengals, who are without their star player Joe Burrow, will be looking forward to secure one more win. The Bengals (3-4) under new quarterback, Joe Flacco, also have the motivation from the win against the division toppers, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Bengals can also gain a .500 record if they manage to secure a win at the Paycor Stadium coming Sunday. The Jets will look for any sort of solace in the constant misery this season. However, the plan of action for such a comeback is yet to be finalized.
Despite his shortcomings and a combined passing yardage below 100 in the past two games and the overall season, Justin Fields is not yet completely out of the picture. Though HC Aaron Glenn had benched him in the Week 7 game for Tyrod Taylor, he’s not ready to appoint Taylor as the starter against the Bengals.
I’m not ready to sit here and say what’s going to happen next week with our quarterbacks, but I will say this: That’s something I have to look at.

Does Brady Cook get his shot? #Jets pic.twitter.com/zoHzlf9le4
Glenn’s half-said answer is likely because Taylor wasn’t any better than Fields. The 36-year-old completed 10 of 22 passes for 126 yards and threw two interceptions in the defeat. The Jets currently don’t have any other options beyond Fields and Taylor. They could elevate Brady Cook, but that is a hot take as far as current conditions are considered.
However, if the ginger talk is to be believed, the Jets may make a move before the trade deadline. There’s no saving this season unless they pull off a miracle among miracles. But even the Jets (hopefully for their fans) will try to save face to avoid the shame of a winless season.
